Corsair RM850i PSU noise

Tearing my hair out.....my Asus Z97-A motherboard died suddenly 3 weeks ago.....very strange.,

After replacing it, my Corsair 850W power supply died....it was only 3 years old. I replaced it with a brand new Corsair RM850I the very next day. Then i noticed that my system has a noticeable noise when under load....ie if I start X-Plane, P3D or DCS, there is a metallic constant squeak, which only starts under load, and stops when I stop the programs and go back to desktop.

I thought my GTX970 was failing so I replaced it......and the noise is STILL there....so the culprit is definitely the Corsair Power Supply. Has anybody had this before? Should I look at replacing it or is it just a squaky frame or fan in the PSU?

If I take it back to the shop, they take them for testing and will mean 2 weeks without a PC which I am trying to avoid.

You can't return the RM850i?  Is there not a return period?  I'm not familiar with AUS consumer protection laws, but surely you have some rights.  At any rate, it should be replaced... shouldn't be making any noise, and you clearly have lost confidence in it (no one could blame you for doing so).

It could have been that the PSU was unstable and killed the motherboard. I've had it happen the other way around too, namely that a motherboard killed my PSU. like you, had to replace both.

 

Are you sure it's the PSU that's noisy? Have you checked all of your case fans? Easy to do, just briefly stop each fan in turn by placing a finger in the centre of the hub. Watch your fingers.

As for the PSU, you have an 850I, the "i" series of Corsair PSU's come with software that enables you to monitor the PSU, switch from multi-rail to single rail and actually adjust the PSU's fan speed.

Given the above, you could change the fan speed in the software when you hear the noise, that way you can determine if it's the PSU fan that's faulty, under load, at higher PSU fan speed. You can download the software from Corsair's website. 

The other possibility is some kind of coil whine, but the way you describe the sound, doesn't seem like coil whine.

Hi Martin,

Apparently, what I have is indeed coil whine.....until now I had never heard of the term....but watched some YouTube videos and the noise is spot on. Raised a ticket with Corsair....3 days later they asked for proof of purchase, and half a week later no further news. I will take it back to the retailer I got it from and ask for a replacement....it is a real pain having to undo all the cabling inside the case but these things happen I guess.
