Confused about Speedbugs

Recommended Posts

Hello!

The Manual says besisde the picture of the Airspeed indicator:

Airspeed reference Bugs: Movable pointers. Click on the upper center part of the instrument frame to position the bugs for takeoff, or click on the lower center part of the frame to position the bugs for landing. Click on the center left part of the frame (near the 300 indication) to ‘park’ the bugs.

But there is no description what the bugs indicate. I know they should show things like V1, VR, V2 and clean speed but they dont matched on one of my flights. I had 132kts as VR (set belonging to the inbuild speedcard) but the first bug was close before the 132 at around 125 and the next bug was at around 140.

Also it says that we should click on the upper center part of the frame to get bugs for TO and the lower part for Landing, but I am able to click thru it with my right mouse button, I am also able to "park" the bugs without clicking near the 300 on the left. This made me curious if this is working generally different as intended in the manual.

Thank you for clarification, as I love this Bird and want to understand all nuances of it!

Hi, you are correct about the bugs reference's

- 1st bug = V1

- 2nd bug = Vr

- 3rd bug = Flap Retraction

- 4th bug = Slat Retraction / clean speed

MCP Speed should be set to V2 +10 for safe climbout.

In order to check the bugs are correct ensure you have loaded and checked the fuel and payload of the aircraft vs the load manager (if on a second flight for example, click addons -> Maddog -> reload from CFG)

I can attest the speeds do match to the takeoff and landing data cards. Can you confirm which sim you are using?

Thanks

Hmm. I thought the 2nd bug was V2......

Thank you very much! I didnt set +10.

I use FSX.

Speed can be set to 250 (or SID spd restriction) in FGCP speed window. Used at Accel.height along with half rate Vertical Speed if required.

Hi,

When I try to move the speed bugs with the mousewheel at one of the 4 corners of the instrument, all bugs are moving simultaniously.

How can I move just one single bug?

Kind regards

Martin

I habe also noticed thst the bugs match whatever speeds you pint into the CDU....at least for Vr and V1.

The speedbugs are auto-set to what the speedcard says.

CDU overruled the speedcard

And the flap selector dial for the trim determines the flaps on the speedcard.

That’s a good thing, because when flying with flex temp, the Topcat speeds never coincide with the ones on the speed card. I think the V speeds on the cart are for full throttle take off.

That's what I figured. I prefer it this way. More intuitive.

Didn't know thst about the speed cards. Was wondering how I selected different speed cards.

The speed card is selected by the weight you enter in the FMC.

I believe the speed cards are just PDF files, and the one that is selected is the one closest to your current takeoff weight.  They are all referenced to Flap 15.

I almost always use Flex power settings, and dial-a-flap at considerably less than 15 degrees - both calculated with Topcat using the current takeoff runway and weather conditions. I use the Topcat calculated V speeds too.

I have taken off with flap set as low as 3 degrees, which means the VR/V2 will be quite a bit higher than on the speed cards.

Makes for a longer takeoff run, but better acceleration in the climb - especially at airports like KATL where all the SIDS require aircraft to accelerate to 250 knots as quickly as possible.

The bugs on the airspeed indicator will move to the V speeds entered in the FMS.

Speed cards are referenced to the flap setting in the takeoff computer (on the pedestal). And afaik, you can change the weights by scrolling on the actual weight displayed on the speed card, no? Bring them up by using shift+5
