User Waypoints

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

How can I back up, to later "import" the user waypoints I create in the GTN and also, in the GNS? Where are they located?

Thanks in advance,

Rafael Carelli

Hi Rafael,
GTN C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\FPLN

GNS C:\ProgramData\Garmin\GNS Trainer Data\GNS\FPL

Hi,

Please note the aforementioned locations are where to put the text file listing all the user waypoints to import in the device. However, there is no 'export' function on device to save such files: they are manually created with notepad (or equivalent). Only the GNS V2 also offers an 'export flight plan' function to save a route from the catalog to file.

Otherwise, every route / wpt / settings is saved in the device non-volatile memory file, which is typically located:

"C:\ProgramData\Garmin\GNS Trainer Data\GNS\sys_nand#" (GNS Trainer 3.3)
"C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\nonvol\sys_nand#" (GTN Trainer 6.41+)
"C:\ProgramData\Garmin\GTN Trainer Data\GTN\GTN1nonvol\sys_nand#" (GTN Trainer 6.21 and below)

sys_nand0 is the genuine 'clean' default file.
sys_nand# is the per-device, per-unit# file.

Hi again Bill, it worked for the GTN, but not for the GNS.

Thanks!! That's exactly what I was looking for!

So, backing up those files, I can reuse them in a later reinstall of the GTN/GNS right? (What if the Trainer version changes meanwhile?)

Yes you can backup and restore these files. New trainer versions usually pickup the old sys_nand file and upgrade it if needed automatically, in-place.

As for the GNS import, please note the file format is different than for the GTN. These are xml files (see sample pack installed - ref user's manual)

I just read it in the manual, but as I see it only imports Flightplans, not user waypoints, right? I may be missing something, for sure.

There's no XML files in the sample pack :(

The GNS flightplan files (.fpl) are actually written as XML files. Just the file extension is changed to FPL.

I got that Bill, but what I'm trying to do is IMPORT USER WAYPOINTS to the GNS, not flight plans.

I'm not sure if that's possible with the GNS. I could be wrong thou.

Thanks Bill!

Maybe @RXP can solve this mistery for us!

You can't import user waypoints in the GNS (IIRC). However, any flight plan with wpts no in the DB automatically create user wpts (IIRC too).

As for the FPL example, see ref. to "starter pack" p8 of the GNS V2 manual.
