Air File Question

Recommended Posts

Guys,One of the aircraft I use in FS has a very slow spool time for the engines compared to the real aircraft (witnessed by countless DVD shows and being in the real sim for 3 hours!), and I was wondering if its possible for me to increase the spool time at all?Am I right to look in the air file, or the aircraft.cfg file or both? I'm aware I need to use AirEd to modify it, but what exactly am I looking for in the program itself? Thanks for any help possible!Henry

Turboprop or jet?According to Ron Freimuth's aircraft.cfg, for turboprop spoolup:propeller_moi=2.0 << Affects Prop gyro effects and RPM change rate ~(0.6/386)*Weight_Prop*Dp^2; Or, try 2.0*(Dp/6.25)^5 (based on C172 prop)You can find that here: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/hsors/FS_Soft/index.htmlFor jet engines, check .air file table 1501 spool up rate.

Milton,Thanks for your help, it's indeed a jet aircraft. I downloaded the application from that FS_Soft website but it didnt really shed any more light, and looking up section 1501 in the airfile gave me hex data of:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/150478.jpgIs there a way to be able to edit this properly?Henry

Download aired from the link I posted above. Also download the latest aired. ini file.Once installed, editing the .air file is super easy.

Milton,Sorry to be a bug but I've increased the spool rate from about 0.0025 to a value of 4, and theres no huge change in the rate at which the engine spools up!I want it to go from idle to 60% in about 1.5s and then up to say 90% in another second or so, I'm working on the PSS B777, their newer one, but it doesnt seem to be having an effect...is there something else I need to change too?Henry

Oh!!Please please could you guys help me too? I need to increase the cruise-speed of a turboprop I have (Dash 8 Q400) could you all tell me what to tweak in the .air or .cfg? I have AirEd!Sorry to jump in here with this but I found Henry's question interesting, even more so since it involved an air file tweak which is what I need guidance on.Thanks :)

Nevin,I'm new to editing airfiles etc...but if you want to increase the cruising speed, you might have to keep an eye on the drag profiles etc...If you want to increase the thrust look in the air file in section 1501 and check the lbs of thrust at sea level bit...i believe theres something in the aircraft.cfg too so have a look at that. One other thing, make sure you backup any changes you make...just in case! Thanks Henry!I will look into all that and yes I will make sure I back up!BTW in case you are wondering why I want to increase the cruise speed its because the original .air file for the Dash 8 would not work for me (plane was unflyable) so I replaced it with the .air file of a Fokker 50....and now the Q400 flies really well with that .air file...except that it trundles along at like 120kts max lol so I need to tweak it! I've got the data to hand for the real Q400 as guidance!

Douglas,Thanks for your assistance, I did have a go with the fuel_flow_gain in the aircraft.cfg and it now works properly, so mission accomplished in my eyes :DHenry

Hello Douglas, thank you for your further advice. I temporarily forgot the name of that parameter. But we know that the shape of the T1505 will effect the spool up time as confirmed by our research as well. Actually how spool up varies at different engine speeds.Ian
