So, do we like skyforce

Recommended Posts

Haven't played in a while but skyforce had just come out before I stopped playing. I was wondering if it is "better" than active sky. There was lots of debating back and forth but it has quieted down. I am deciding whether to buy it or not. Thank you so much.

For me

the cloud models are great and worth the purchase alone

the cloud textures are ok, but kill my performance unless 512

the wx engine is inferior compared to AS

Yes, we do, but only for the cloud structures and textures. For the weather itself Active Sky is still the best. By far.

Yeah using the clouds and the sounds ,

Sometimes using the inbuild route import .pln planning do give me a .netframe error but its not a breakdealer.

ASP4+ASCA+ENVTEX+ASF actually works

I ended up going back to AS+ASCA+ENVTEX+ENVSHADE myself... And all I ever used to use was REX... My how things change.

I don't use the engine but the clouds with the ORBX cloud themes (especially 3) are great.

Why do you use ASCA with Rex?

You can use it for the sky textures so you get the Envetex Textures injected and the different texture each flight.  I think most of us do it because we already had ASCA so might as well put it to some use.  I doubt it's worth it to buy ASCA just for that.

REX has the biggest upside I believe, but you really need the ActiveSky Weather engine.  I wouldn't go back to ASCA myself after using REX for a couple months.

Its good for the textures etc, never even bothered with the weather engine. Got active sky for that

In my opinion, SF is not as good as advertised. I haven’t really seen anything “ground breaking” since purchasing it. Yeah textures are upgraded from REX4 but I certainly wouldn’t have purchased it if I knew what I know now. You still get spinning clouds when panning. That isn’t so much to do with REX as it is with the limitations of the P3D. It can be a pretty big hit on FPS if cloud coverage/textures are too high. They have been working on hotfixes for months now to help smooth out the weather injects for the engine. I still use the software since I bought it but only for textures. I use AS for engine. Nothing else compares.

I use Active Sky for the weather engine and Skyforce for the textures. Previously I used ASCA.

I would say texture wise there isn't a massive difference. What you do see however is a greater range of cloud models and properly overcast sky. I usually generate a random theme each flight and it gives me some nice variation.

One thing that needs to still be worked out and is maybe a sim limitation is scaling.

Take a real life flight look out the window and often the cloud looks far far below you and small cloud puffs etc. Now compare with a sim flight with a low cloud base and it typically looks much closer with bigger clouds.

Haven’t used SF , but my ASP4 + ASCA + EnvTex combo gives me fully covered OC...

Regarding the clouds below the aircraft I agree with you .

I still have major FPS problem in 4K with metar using OVC. Best combo is draw distance at Low 75 and Max at 120. 3 layers and PERFORMANCE choosen  in ASCA.

SLI 970

Best clouds is SF in my opinion

Thanks Michael Moe

I saw a noticeable increase in performance using the SF weather engine with SF textures / models than when combining it with OPUS or AS. Try running that as a test case Michael...
