CTD over Rockies-> reboot-> whole system slower than mo...

Featured Replies

Here's what happened: Just installed FSG Rockies mesh, Sandmann's Yellowstone, Beartooth, Grand Tetons, made adjustments per "Readme". No other potentially conflicting addons that I know of. Took off from Red Lodge heading out over Beartooths -> CTD. Notices/errors (paraphrased)-> video driver couldn't handle it, said something about a kernel associated with the video driver, did a memory dump. After reboot, the whole system was very sloooooow, everything maybe 1/2-1/3 normal speed from "Welcome" on. FS slow to load, but apparently everything works except "shift z/z" for fps, etc. doesn't display, although it DOES display automatically as usual in slew. Compared FS9.cfg with good backup from ~week ago-> slightly different size, didn't check line by line (should have). Replaced FS9.cfg-> same, still slow, no "shift z/z", so no difference. Made the same flight over Beartooths-> slow, sluggish responses, but it flew (beautiful, saw American Falls and Old Faithful in Yellowstone), no "shift z/z" display except in slew, which shows ~20-24 fps but obviously (from the persistent stuttering and occasional longer pauses) fps is very low during flight. Same stuttering, pauses, slow response no matter where, what or when I'm flying. So I think the new scenery is installed OK, and FS is basically OK, too, except the no "shift z/z" display. I assume this is an OS problem since whole system has slowed down, e.g., "start" -> "programs" takes 15 seconds to get program list. Before it came up instantly. Internet connection speeds are normal both wifi and modem. But starting them up and doing anything online is very slow. Open a window and parts of it appear, > 10 seconds for whole window. Close a window and it "peels" off the screen, takes maybe 5 seconds. Open same window again, however, comes up fast, normal. Anything i do a second time, it speeds up, near or at normal, just the first time is slow. Same thing happens offline.Process explorer (like task manager) shows higher than normal CPU use, 30-60% at idle 2-3 minutes after startup vs. 3-10% normally. but no unusual processes. McAfee, Webroot Spy Sweeper and Process Explorer itself are the culprits, MC taking 20-40%, WRSS similar, PE taking 10-15%. Normally Mc ~20% max, WRSS ~15% max, PE ~8% max. Deferred procedure calls, normally < 1% are at 5-8% CPU use now. PE Help says high DPCs can indicate a device driver bug or hardware problem, but i don't know what "high" DPCs are. Eventually, if I just let it sit for maybe 30 minutes, CPU use comes down to 3-10%. Benchmarking with Everest indicates lower performance compared to about a week ago: Read, 3600 before, 2651 now. Write, 810 before, 717 now. Latency, 95 before, 118 now. Ran CCleaner, no change, maybe a little. Ran Spybot, Adaware, several virus scans-> nothing. Ran HijackThis-> nothing. Have not tried system restore. Do I lose the 700+ MB of Rockies mesh? Need to read a tutorial.I am obviously over my head here. Anyone have a suggestion... or two?Regards RobXP pro sp2 2.13Ghz Pentium M (usually benchmarks about same as a P4 with ~3Ghz) 1 Gb RAM 100Gb HD, 300Gb external HD. Mobile Intel 945 chipset, 128 Mb. Normally runs FS at 19-24 fps (locked at 24) with all sliders full right.

Rob,Since you just installed new scenery, it looks like your scenery.cfg may be corrupted (Layers/Areas not in numerical sequence; duplicate Area/Layer numbers). Also, make sure FSG Rockies is lower than the other sceneries you installed (lower area in scenery.cfg and higher number in the scenery library). If you have Ultimate Terrain installed, FSG Rockies should be above Ultimate Terrain in the Scenery Library. I hope you uninstalled and reinstalled your video card after receiving the video driver error. Also, you could have a system memory problem (pagefile). I have mine set to "System managed size).Lastly, check the event viewer and look for any error events under Application, System, or Security. Sometimes MS provides a solution to your problem here.Hope this helps some. Best regards,JimYoung

First, I looked in scenery.cfg. All of the recently installed sceneries, yellowstone, beartooth, tetons, and others are NOT there. All of the scenery "missing" from the scenery.cfg list are installed in the Addon scenery folder. All of those sceneries (21 of them) are enabled in scenery library and they all work, including yellowstone, beartooth, and tetons. The 44 areas on the scenery.cfg list are in numerical sequence with corresponding layer sequence, i.e., Area.042 same as Layer=42. (I don't know much about scenery.cfg areas or layers, tutorial?) Several areas I have disabled in scenery library ARE on scenery.cfg list as "Active=TRUE. Should they be? The FSG Rockies mesh installs automatically so I don't know where it is installed. As it is terrain, I don't think it is supposed to show up in scenery library or on scenery.cfg list. None of the mesh I have installed shows up in scenery. If mesh is supposed to be on scenery list/in scenery library, something is messed up. I don't know how to uninstall/reinstall video card. I don't even know what that means. My video "card" is internal, an Intel mobile chipset (computer is notenook). Can that be uninstalled/reinstalled? How do I check for memory (pagefile) problem? I found the error message in "event viewer" under "system" category. It says, "The driver ialmrnt5 for the display deviceDevicevideo0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device or with the device driver programming the device incorrectly. Please check with your driver vendor for any driver updates." I have the latest driver update. This happened once before when there was a conflict between Columbia River Gorge addon sceneries. But that's not the case here. First, no conflicts in these sceneries. Second, This new problem has affected the whole system, in and out of FS. Not true before. I think the pagefile/memory thing or the video card driver uninstall/reinstall is the best direction to look. Except I don't know how to do either one of those jobs. Point me in the right direction? Thanks for Jim's response and his or anyone else's to come. RegardsRobIn case it matters, I have 2 "addon scenery" titles on scenery library list, only one in scenery.cfg. Problem?

"Several areas I have disabled in scenery library ARE on scenery.cfg list as "Active=TRUE. Should they be?"If they are disabled, they should read Active=FALSE. The numerical sequence is correct (Area.042/Layer42). You can manually change the TRUE to FALSE, save the config and retry."In case it matters, I have 2 "addon scenery" titles on scenery library list, only one in scenery.cfg. Problem?"Yes. A problem as all addon sceneries must be shown on the scenery library list as well as in your scenery.cfg. If not, you can manually add the scenery through the Scenery Library. Just click add and goto where the scenery file is located. "How do I check for memory (pagefile) problem?"You need to get into your System Properties. I right click My Computer on the desktop, select Properties, goto the Advance Tab, click on settings under Performance, hit the Advance Tab, then hit Change under Virtual Memory and then check my pagefile settings."I found the error message in "event viewer" under "system" category. It says, "The driver ialmrnt5 for the display deviceDevicevideo0 got stuck in an infinite loop."I now doubt you have a memory problem as your main problem is your internal video card. Uninstall the card/driver by going into your device manager, selecting display adaptors, and select uninstall. You will have to restart your computer and the internal video card should automatically reinstall itself when you restart. To get to the Device Driver, I right click My Computer on my desktop, select Properties, hit the Device Manager tab, scroll down to display adaptor, double-click the displayed video card or select Properties, and then select uninstall.
