P3D v4.2 CTD at Scenario Screen

Recommended Posts

Hello,

This morning, P3D v4,2 ran fine on my Win 10 Home PC (i5-4690k, GTX 1080, 32 GB RAM).  Upon shutdown, there was an "Update and shutdown" selection, and windows installed 2 updates.

Tonight I purchased several FTX sceneries on sale (Trees, Northern CA, and 3 airports).  All installed normally via FTX Central.  P3D had been working fine with many other FTX sceneries on board.

After install, I started P3D and I got a "P3D has stopped working" error right at the display of the Scenario screen.

I uninstalled the FTX sceneries - no change.

I tired to uninstall the win 10 update, but it came right back at restart.

I followed the CTD guide from start to finish (except for reinstall of P3D) with no joy.

Wondering if anyone else's P3D v4.2 broke with this windows 10 update?

The following are my AppCrash and Event Viewer reports.

Any help much appreciated.  I have a fairly recent disk image I can restore, but I did install a few things after it, so would like to avoid.

Thanks!

Scott

This was fixed by me by disabling the Carenado entry in the dll.xml which loads CMeteoXmlx64.dll module.

I will try that, but shouldn't my renaming the dll and exe.dll files to .off have permitted an error free start?

Thanks!

Correct.  But there are two dll.xml for P3D.  One located in the same folder as your p3d.cfg and one located in the same folder as your scenery.cfg (new default).

I changed both of these files to .OFF, but are you saying that when P3D generates a new default dll.xml on the fly, that default file will contain a reference to the CMeteoXmlx64.dll module - which is presumably corrupt - and so still crashes P3D?  If so, that would be great 🙂!

Will test out after work.

Thanks again,

Scott

When you rename your two dll.xml's to .off, only the one in the folder with the scenery.cfg will be rebuilt with default entries.  However, this will tell you if one of the dll.xml's is loading a module that is corrupted or missing and causing P3D to crash.  This is why the best method is to open up the dll.xml that has a suspected bad module like the CMeteoxmlx64 and disable it by changing "False" to "True" in the entry and save it.

If you are not getting a crash with both dll.xml's turned "OFF", then another solution I have found is to check your addon.xml's for your addon scenery.  If one is not encoded properly, it will cause this particular crash.  You can check all of your addon.xml's by opening Lorby_Si Addon Organizer and clicking on "Check for Encoding Errors".  If there are any encoding errors, just click Save in the Scenery tab and that will fix them all.

Sounds good.  I used Lorby to disable scenery for testing as per the guide, but I didn't try the check errors function.  At least I've got a couple of things to try before having to restore my disk image.

Thanks!

OK, unfortunately all failed.  There was no such setting in my dll.xml - just references to the PMDG heads-up display and RAASPro.  I deactivated both but no joy.  Also tried deleting default scenario - nope.  Checked scenery integrity in Lorby - all fine.  Deleted shaders folder - no joy.  Ugh.

Now will try to reinstall P3D components.  Next stop is restoring image (at least only 48 hrs old).

That error was happening a lot with P3DV4.0 with Carenado aircraft and complaints were sent to Carenado and they responded that Lockheed Martin found the problem and it will be included with the next update.  When that update was released, I had no more problems with the Phenom 300 or any other Carenado aircraft.  See https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/518235-symmapdll-crashes-in-p3d-v4/

You might also disable all of your addon scenery in the Addon Organizer (double-click each so they turn red) and make sure there are no addon scenery in the scenery.cfg.  It is most likely a problem with an addon not compatible with V4.2.

Yep, tried that.  Oddly, P3D immediately displayed a screen saying it need "at least an airport or Navaid" to start, and closed right down.  Apparently I have no default scenery?  Something clearly was way off, and trying to start with one FTX airport enabled to get past that screen caused the same error as previously.  I gave up, but was consoled by having a fairly recent disk image of a working configuration at the ready to restore 🙂!

After restoring an image from 2 days prior, P3D worked (as expected), and still worked after the  Windows 10 update 😅.  Now its time to slowly add the new stuff to see what might have done this.

Thanks again for all of your efforts to help.  Great forum, and very helpful CTD guide.  I just had one of those issues that evaded diagnosis.

You do not want to disable any default scenery.  In the Addon Organizer you do not want to disable anything below Bathymetry.  There is no addon scenery which should give you an error of "at least an airport or Navaid to start".  That might occur if you disable any of the default scenery especially any scenery required for the default setup.

Glad you got it fixed by restoring a backup.
