May 25, 20188 yr Super shots of Owens Valley and Mono Lake showing the rhyolite in the mountains above Mono Lake....seeing white and gray in the scenery means the scenery is not tinted! HLJAMES
May 26, 20188 yr I like how MSE captured this part of California. Owens Valley is comparable to the Tetons in its breathtaking beauty, with one of the largest vertical rises from a valley floor in the world, with Mt. Whitney dominating, the tallest mountain in the contiguous US. On a more serious note, many years ago a plane crashed just ten feet shy of the western crest of the Sierras. The pilot did not make it, but the woman crawled out of the wreckage and made it down the eastern crest to the valley floor, to 395 and safety. Just an amazing act of survival and instinct and the will to live. I believe the air accident took place in the 70's and it was news all over California for those of us living there, even written about in Reader's Digest. John
