Why has Microsoft done this to me? Is it the update that made it this way?

Recommended Posts

Hi,
I have an issue that has finally put me to the edge of giving up, I hope
you can help me please.

Okay, I use Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX) just
about everyday. I have been enjoying it until the point where
Microsoft decided to update my computer on April 30, 2018. The
update left me with a barrage of issues with my graphics in which the
exact settings I have never changed.

I updated all my drivers when the 2018 Update "upgraded" my
system's settings (like usual after a Creator's Update from MS).

Now, I started up FSX afterwards and well... let's just say FSX is
unstable and impossible to use. The issues with frames
STUTTERING every 2 seconds or so, FPS DROPS and TERRIBLE
ANTI-ALIASING became the way FSX was now made to do
. Never
had this issue before. It seems like my Intel Graphics are
overpowering my nVidia Graphics, even though my 630M is selected
as the operating graphics for it.

Why has Microsoft done this to me? Is it the update that made it this
way?

Thanks,

Braden Bogdan

Anything missing in your Sim like Missions or any saved flight plans?  I have given several folks my instant cure for these problems.  I have used it many times.

I am having very similar issues Braden. The update made many changes without me knowing, and ever since I have been having very strange issues with FSX-SE. The problems are not identical to you except the fact that what was before a smooth, stable setup is now a disaster with multiple problems... I had absolutely no problems with Windows 10 previously - both with FS9 and FSX-SE...

Every system is different as well as the installation of FSX and FSX addons.  There is a solution to your problem(s) (other than Charlie's), and I use it every time I have an issue with FSX.  I disable the dll.xml and fsx.cfg by renaming them dll.xml.off and fsx.cfg.off.  I restart the sim and see if this fixes the problem.  The fsx.cfg will be rebuilt but not the dll.xml.  It will be just disabled.  The dll.xml loads modules that addon developers have installed.  One module known to cause stutters if not up-to-date is the FSUIPC utility.  So, if the stutters stop after disabling the dll.xml, then go into the dll.xml and disable the fsuipc module.  The AVSIM CTD Guide, page 14 tells you how.  The guide also tells you how to disable the dll.xml and fsx.cfg and how to find them on your drive if you are not familiar with these actions.

LOL - Charlie, I'm not quite ready for that but I'm getting close. If I could, I would use it on the skulls of the arrogant MS programmers who think it's okay to force changes on their "customers" (inmates maybe?) without any notification or requesting permission...

Jim, I will probably try this next. I had a saved copy of my fsx.cfg from a period where everything was in the sweet spot and the sim was running flawlessly, so I had hoped that by using this, it would give me back what I've lost. But I've found numerous corrupted files, so I have a feeling that a full reinstall is going to be my only real solution. (Groan)… I'm trying everything I can to avoid that but... As you say, everyone's system and installation is different and I'm sure the majority of people have had no problem with the update, or the forums would be flooded with complaints. But for me it's been a total disaster

Dovetail has a way to repair default files.  FSX (boxed version), you can try running FSX then SP2 OR Acceleration (whichever configuration you have) and select repair.  It should not mess with any of your configuration files or mess with any add-on files.  I know when I did a repair, it never messed with my configs or add-ons but you might backup your configs first to be sure.

I forgot to mention above that if the anomalies do not end after rebuilding your fsx.cfg and renaming your dll.xml, then you should also rename your scenery.cfg to scenery.cfg.off.  When you do this, the default will be installed which is good as none of your addon scenery will load.  If the stuttering continues, then you know it is not the scenery.cfg and you can bring the one you renamed back as the scenery.cfg and your add-ons are back.  I do know for a fact as it happened to me that the fsuipc will cause stuttering every two seconds if not the latest version.  One does not need the fsuipc utility unless you want to use one of the features.

I mention all of these possible solutions because I have the latest April 2018 Windows Update and see absolutely no issues with FSX (boxed version).  I do not use any tweaks but I do know that tweaks, if not properly employed (with the right figures), will cause stuttering and other anomalies.

You're not alone. The FSX SE freezes, I get a white and/or black screen. Not sure if my PREPARED v4 is done for, but I also have these problems when I'm not on the sim, but while using the internet.

Go to System Properties and create a new restore point, when done go to system restore and choose a restore point before the Update and restore this. You can always restore back if necessary. To make sure my FSX (not steam) works if there is a problem, which I get sometimes with scenery, I create a new system restore point at least once a week , this has always worked for me, hope it does for you.

He can also go to updates and roll back the most recent to the previous.

Right Click on the Windows Start button, left lower corner.
Click Settings
Click Update and Security
Click Windows Update
Click View Installed Update History
Click Uninstall Updates

Then choose what update(s) to uninstall

I needed to do this in Mid-May as the 5/14/18 Feature Set Update rendered my Chrome unusable.

Thanks everyone!

The only issue with rolling back to the previous version of my Windows before the update is..... well, the Windows.old folder is not on my hard drive anymore! Thanks to me and the Disk Cleanup utility! (Lesson learned, lol)

I will try the scenery.cfg and module tests to see if anything is lying around and causing trouble. I also want to say that I run the BUFFERPOOLS-poolsize=0 and himemfix=1 tweaks in my fsx.cfg, which when not there, cause stuttering.

Thanks again for your help everyone, and I will let you know what happens and hope for a solution to this!

You may need to re-apply nvidia CP or Inspector settings, and rebuild your shaders - delete FSX folder under "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft".

I suspect there cuold be more about this update, but it's worth trying, since you said AA is a problem

Hi there, tell us about what kind of addons do you use, also you 've said something about Intel / nVidia combination (?), give us more details about it. Do you use an Antivirus?

Regards.

Thanks as well

I am going to put my fsx.cfg content below, and which the TRUSTED area will show what I have running from the dll.xml. My computer specs as well.

I am not using any 3rd party anti-virus software, just Microsoft Defender.

(HEADS-UP, LONG!)

Thanks
