Crash of P3D Version 3.4 with 15 miles of EBCI

Recommended Posts

I have had several crashes of my normally very stable P3D 3.4 over the past several months , and always within 10-20 miles of EBCI, It always is a G3D.dll  I use MY Traffic 6 with Military disabled. Never have this crash anywhere else I fly which is all over t he US and Europe, I have no add on scenery for that area. Any ideas?

The G3D.dll error is commonly associated ONLY with Orbx/FTX scenery.  I suspect it could happen in another scenery but only users of FTX/Orbx get this error (well, it is the most popular and most simmers purchase the scenery!!).  It is impossible to find the cause that creates this error.  This is why Pete from FSUIPC set a trap for the G3D error.  If it occurred, FSUIPC would trap the error and the flight could continue and, if you looked in the fsuipc.log after the flight, you would see many incidents where the error was trapped.  This is only for FSX/P3DV3 users though.  Some have fixed this error by lowering their P3D/FSX settings, especially image settings for the video card.

There is a large thread on the G3D error created back when FSX was first released and after Orbx released the Pacific NorthWest scenery.  I personally think there is an object in the scenery that is not compatible.  We will never know as no one has ever solved the crash except for Pete.  This is the reason I went from the freeware version of the FSUIPC to the payware version (the G3D trap works for the freeware/payware versions) as I thought Pete needed a big reward for setting up this trap.

I do recall getting a G3D error 100% of the time when flying over the Pacific and near the 9L approach to San Diego.  I had Orbx SoCal and KSAN installed. Always at the exact same location.  I then realized there were many military bases around San Diego and figured that was the issue.  Doing some research, I found where members jabloomfl230 and 4LOM found incompatible textures from several military and civilian aircraft made in FS9 days and removed them as well as disabling the military bgl.  I know I employed the fixes (see page 25, AVSIM CTD Guide), but not completely sure it fixed my problem.  My G3D crashes did stop but I did so many things I'm not sure what fixed my issue.  I do remember getting rid of the Orbx KSAN and replacing it with the LatinVFR version and that might have fixed the issue but don't remember.  I got hundreds of crashes and freezes and BSOD's over the years and it is hard to keep track of them.  If you are looking for a specific fix, I doubt you will find it for the G3D error.  You can investigate and disable MyTrafficX in your scenery.cfg and see if that fixes the problem but that is not a sure bet it is the fix as it only means disabling AI traffic gives you more resources so just lowering your p3d.cfg settings might fix the problem.  I suggest renaming your p3d.cfg to p3d.cfg.off, restart P3D and let the config rebuild.  Fly the route again and see if this fixed the problem (do not change any of the default settings).  Yes, it will look ugly flying with the default settings but will give you an idea what might have caused your G3D error.

Best regards,

Jim

The proximity to Brussels might be something too? Do you have a scenery for that area?

Thanks, I purchased several FTX regions in Europe a couple of months ago. Only thing I have in the Belgium area is UTX Europe. I will check that FSUIPC log next time it happens. Thanks for the info.

Just UTX Europe.and some of the free Orbx airports, but none are right near Brussels.

Have you tried turning your AI to 0% to eliminate that as a possible cause? From a bad model to a specific repaint or cfg entry, you just never know.

Bob,

I just learned something recently as I was getting BSOD's and crashes randomly during a flight.  The crash reports indicated an issue with memory or the GPU (I have to new ASUS GTX 1080ti).  I was not overclocking (although I could) and I ran diagnostics on my memory simms, and took all of the simms out and reseated them in a different order.  Still got random crashes mostly related to GPU files or functions.  It got very frustrating.  I was using the ASUS GPU TweakII which places the GPU into OC mode or game mode.  I had mine in game mode but decided to set up my own profile with settings at the default except I moved the fans to 100%.  I have not gotten a crash since.  These GPU tweak programs come with almost every new GPU.  I had one for my GTX 780 but did not have problems with that but then I did not use the game or OC mode back then.  These tweak program manage the GPU clock, GPU voltage, fan speed, memory clock, temperature, and monitors VRAM usage if you set in OC or game mode.  I believe that during the flight, the weather, the scenery, maybe the PMDG aircraft, suddenly needed more resources and the utility crashed your sim.  Or, it didn't manage the voltages or GPU clock correctly.  Almost all video card makers have fancy gadgets they provide with their video cards.  I do know that in the past, when I used the EVGA utility, I changed a clock speed and got an instant crash.  So this could be the cause of your G3D.dll crashes and the cause of everyone getting the infamous G3D.dll crash in the past.  In any case, my problems were fixed and I have flown several flights without a crash or BSOD.

Best regards,

Jim
