Will there be a freighter version released with the 747-8?

Recommended Posts

I'm certain they'll have the Freighter version of the -8. To date, more than half of real-world 747-8 deliveries have been Freighters - and in recent years it's closer to 100% Freighters.

And what a hauler this freighter the -8F is!  I compared a B744F flight KSDF - OMDB with one flying the B748F, which is what UPS uses, and the 744F was limited to about 55% payload due to TOGW limits whereas the B748F hauled about 88% of a larger payload capacity on much less fuel.  I suspect the -8F is going to win the hearts of all long haul haulers for many years.

Besides the increase payload and reduced fuel block burn, the center tank is rarely used because the main tanks in that fat wing carry so much... I have a trip from KPAE to ELLX in progress now.  My block fuel was 218,489 lbs and that is all in the wings, the center tank is empty.  Amazing.

Is the 'million pound' MTOW simulated? You know - the record Boeing set in the Mojave a couple years back with the 748F...

MTOW is pay to play, really. The same 400 at one airline can have a lower MTOW than the exact same 400 at another airline. It's a paper chase of approval via your regulatory authority...so "simulated" is really up to you. Ours turns amber/yellow if you're above the generic MTOW, but it's not like it won't still take off, just like a high MTOW 400 going to a carrier that recertifies it to a lower MTOW doesn't suddenly lose the ability to get aloft.

Also: pretty sure the million pound MTOW flight was on a special case / special use permit.

The 748F at MTOW is quite something. Using Flap 10 for departure your V2 speed is a whisker away from 200kts. Out of YSSY on a 24 degree afternoon with TOGA thrust, the takeoff roll felt like it went on forever. The rattling and shaking at those kind of ground speeds is pretty impressive too!
