KIAH RWY 26R Info Not Listed In GPS & ILS Not Working

Recommended Posts

Am using FSX SE. Yesterday I was flying DFW to IAH in the default 738, with wind direction from 270. Was assigned ILS rwy 26R. The default G500 does not show 26R, but does show 8L. The in game map does show 26R with 111.55 Frequency. So I entered 111.55 in NAV 1. With APP engaged the airplane turned the opposite way(away from 26R) when it encountered the Localizer and the ALT HLD disengaged immediately. I re-flew the approach twice more - same thing each time.

Could someone please -

1. Verify that in the G500 IAH 26R is not listed?

2. Try that 26R ILS approach to see if it works properly for them?

I did verify the file integrity in FSXSE and there were no problems.

Thanks - Bruce

Friends don't let friends fly default FSX airplanes.  😉

This sounds like the kind of reverse sensing you see when on a back course approach, which would mean you were receiving the ILS for 08L and not 26R.  Since the ILS for both 08L and 26R at KIAH use the same freq (111.55), if you inadvertently press CTRL+B it'll put you in back course mode on a working frequency and do pretty much what you describe.

Okay, Bob, I know I'm a low life, good for nothing, lazy, lightweight airplane gamer; and that no self respecting, so called serious, sophisticated, real as it gets, hard core simmer would ever stoop so low as to play with a default airplane!! Whew! It's not easy coming out of the closet, but THERE! I SAID IT! 😮

Now that I got that out of the way - I didn't hit CTRL+B. I simply pressed APP hold. It did exactly as you said, so there is a flaw in the game somewhere! I un-ticked the FSDT IAH and re-flew that approach just now using the default IAH and the results were the same.

I'll tell ya what - there is a house across the street for sale here in Sun City West. You move down here and I'll gladly come over and be your student on the PMDG 737!! That's about the only way I'll learn it! I bought Mike Ray's 737 book from him back when the AVSIM Conference was in DEN. I think I got to page 6!?

Hope all is well in COS. Say HI to Bill for me if see him!

Bruce....if I feel froggy today I'll give a flight into KIAH to try.  I fly a POSKY 737-800 and it should be similar to the default ones.  Somehow your situation for 26R seems familiar.  I may have turned off the A/P and hand flew the approach and landing when it turned off course.

You moved to Sun City West?  Well, then there, that explains it!  Just print a picture of the default 737 panel, cut it out, color it with magic marker (don't use crayon, it melts in the AZ sun) and tape it to the dashboard of your golf cart!  Problem solved!!  🙂  But be careful, lest you find yourself driving the wrong way on the 303 loop in your golf cart (I hear people do that kind of thing down there)...don't think the DPS trooper will buy "it was flying the back course all by itself!" as an excuse.

You might try pressing CTRL-B and see if that helps...there could be a setting in the default saved flight that has the panel in back course mode, and pressing CTRL-B would toggle it back off in that case.  Another possibility is that the control got reassigned to a different key or a joystick button in the FSX controls and it's getting activated that way.

Charlie -- That's what I did. I'm not terribly smooth on the visual approaches, but I managed to get down pretty steady on these. My default IAH didn't show any VASI/PAPI (don't know the difference) lights so it was seat of the pants all the way. 😀

Robert!

I'll try the CTRL+B tip and see if that reverses it! Good thinking!

I'm not a golfer and don't own a golf cart, but my house is in Corte Bella which is right along side the 303 at El Mirage. Sounds like you are familiar with the area. Still have a couple motorcycles and am on the 303 frequently to get to the back roads. If you visit close by let me know. I'll buy you a beer!

Gents -

Well, the CTRL-B does indeed work for the localizer. Lines up just fine, however there is no Glideslope. So there are definite errors with the default IAH files for 26R. I'm done messing with it!

I just made a flight from some funk-dunky municipal airport in Oklahoma to KIAH and got the 26R ILS approach.  All went perfectly smooth.  I never lost the IOND identifier, and the Glideslope  worked perfectly.  I was given my turn to 240 degrees about 23 miles out from the airport.  My general rule is to never turn on the APP/APR until I'm less than 19 miles out.  Too many times, if I'm further out, I will immediately lose the heading and altitude hold and fly nowhere fast.

I took a quick screenshot of ATC instructing me to make my turn and pick up the localizer.

Charlie --

Very strange. Did the G500 GPS show the 26R ILS info??

I usually turn on APP when I get fairly close to the green feather.

I rarely use the GPS for anything more than looking at the map and checking waypoints and distance.  I did scroll through some of the features and did see the approaches listed and 26R was one of them.  Could not figure out how to scroll down to see any info about 26R.

Here's a video. If you pause at first you'll see there is no mention of rwy 26R in the GPS. First clip is localizer at work and PFD showing no glide slope. Last clip is landing using trim to compensate for no glide slope.

The default G500 GPS now shows only one runway for DEN!! RWY 17!! I can't imagine re-installing the entire game.

I’ve heard that IAH ATC only assigns landing aircraft 26R or 8L if the pilots have p___ed them off somehow, since it’s about a 3-day taxi from there to the terminal... 😜

Might be time to consider a Repair option if you are running the boxed version of FSX.

Charlie -

I am running the Steam version and there is no repair. They have a *verify integrity of files* option which I have done about 3 times, but that doesn't fix the GPS.
