Can't get GTN650 to work with FSX (resolved)

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I'd like to say I've tried everything, however, if I had, I sure I'd have got this working.

I d/l RXP GTN650 yesterday for FSX.  Initially, after encountering all of the 404 issues, I finally got it installed.  I've previously been using RXP 430 sim trainer with no issues what so ever, and it worked great.  However, I can not for love nor money get the 650 to show up on my aircraft!!  I thought there might be the same little config app that the 430 uses - the one you just assign the the unit to an a/c, position it on the screen.....and you're done, but no, not this one.

Anyway, the user manual was no help.  I just don't know where I'm going wrong, and or if I've done anything right.....

Any held would be gratefully received.

Herc

Hi Herc,

First and foremost, we've just release v2.5.4 update compatible with the latest GTN trainer 6.50. You might want to give it a try a little later if you prefer, time to iron out any potential issue which may surface in the first few days.

Otherwise, for the 'how-to' question:

User's Manual p4 | Getting Started | Add-Ons Menu.

It is illustrated and should get you started in the right direction!

Thanks for your reply.

Ok, finally got this all sorted.  Turns out it was an SP issue, that I've now resolved.

Unfortunately, now I have another issue instead.

After about 5 mins or so of running fine the GTN650 goes 'black' with the word Starting in the lower left corner........  Any ideas on this one?

Can you please detail a little more so that this could help other customers encountering a similar situation?

Can you please check the content of the RXP logs? (see User's Manual for file/path).

Also can you cross check your anti-virus 'quarantined' files for any 'rxp' file?

Thanks for the reply.

OK, the SP issue was that I hadn't installed it - SP2 that is.  My bad!!  Once installed, I got the option to add/configure the 650 on the aircraft screen.

Unfortunately, the Black screen of death issue is still happening though.  It's fine one minute......and then poof! Black, Starting......... and nothing again.

I can confirm there are no quarantined files in my Avast Virus Chest.

Just saying, the RXP G430 I had worked great, and I never had any issues with it.  So far, I've spent more time trying to get the GTN650 working than actually using it.......

Thank you for the detailed information. It seems you are running a configuration with a 'limited' graphics card, but this shall be enough unless too many applications are drawing resources out of it at the same time.

Can you please try the following:

1) locate the RealityXP.GTN.ini file in the folder where the aircraft you are flying with is located.

2) open this file with notepad.exe

3) locate the section starting with [GTN_650_1]

4) right below it, and prior the other lines in the form of name = value, add the following lines:

DebugValue = 1
LogTrainer = 1

These are documented in User's Manual p18.

Hi,

it looks like there is a problem of some sort with the 'charts'. You are also not running the latest GTN v2.5.4.

I'd suggest the following then:

1) download the latest Reality XP GTN 750 e-commerce installer from our website.

2) select "re-install" with your purchase key/password.

3) once unwrapped and the RXP installer runs, select the correct options and let it download and run the latest GTN Trainer v6.50.

4) select GTN (at least, but another customer has reported it required installing TXi and GDU as well for the GTN to run)

5) keep the extra entries in the ini file and see how it goes this time with the lastest RXP GTN and the latest GTN Trainer.

Did you mean d/l GTN750?  This issue is for the GTN650

I can't install/re-install 750 as my key isn't valid for that product.

Sorry, yes of course, I should have written GTN 650 instead because this is the product you have.

OK.....did that!  Now all I'm getting is a black screen, and the following log file.

I just installed let the Garmin install in the default directories, so I have no idea why this is happening!!

18/09/08 04:26:38.015 03212 -    ] # rxpGtnSim32.dll version 2.5.3.0

I'm going to be honest, I'm pretty much at the end of my tether with this thing now.  I bought this app 3-4 days ago, and it wasn't cheap ($75NZD).  I bought it because the RPX 430 worked just great.  Unfortunately, I have spent the best part of the time since buying the 650..... well......far***g about with config files, debug code etc etc.  I have installed and uninstalled the app, and all of the Garmin extras more times than I care to remember now, and it's got me nowhere!

I still have the same issue I've been having all along.  The unit starts, then within a minute 'freezes' (or goes black) - typically now though it's just freezing i.e. the display is still visible, but it is unresponsive to inputs.

I will add one thing that I can't explain, that might be of significance, or not.  When I try and run any of the Navigators with the Garmin Aviation Trainer app they will not poser up.  I press the Power On at the bottom right and it just cycles through Power Up, Powered Up and Power Down, Powered Down!  Any ideas.

The GTN trainers (that pop up the throttle etc) all work just fine.

Lets's give this one more go - Look forward to hearing your ideas.

Hi,

I'm sorry for the unsatisfactory out-the-box experience. It is smooth a process for most our customers, there are just sometimes system configurations which are not cooperative.

Hopefully, with our help and your assistance, we'll certainly find out what is causing this. This might just be a out of place a system configuration which will also positively affect your day-to-day computer operation.

First of all, you might want to review your system. A quick tour on the Dell website shows your system is not up to date (Bios is now 1.11.1, Video is 24.20 - you are 2 versions behind etc...)

Also, if your laptop has both Intel HD graphics and nVidia graphics, you might want to find the way to 'forcefully' use the nVidia discrete chipset whenever you run FltSim and the Garmin trainer. Unlike desktops,  laptops are not meant for gaming unless you properly configure them for it.

Let's start in making sure you update your machine drivers to the latest first:

Thanks Jean-Luc

I had a suspicion it might be to do with the graphics drivers after I read a few other posts, so I updated them before seeing your post.  I seems that it might have done the trick although I haven't had the opportunity to test fully.

After reading your post I just updated everything anyway......

Fingers crossed.  (If you don't hear from me again assume all is well with the world 😉 )
