Another "Blurries" Question

Recommended Posts

As far as I understand, there are at least two different types of blurries:

First, normal terrain scenery blurries which seem to be time dependent. They disappear when texture loading catches up or if I pause the the simulation. Second, photo scenery blurries, they seem to be more distance dependent. They disappear when I come nearer but won't disappear during pause. ORBX photo scenery in Valdez fjord is a good example.

Are these observations correct or am I totally wrong? Which UI settings would have the most effective (normal terrain vs photo scenery)?

I agree with you and have yet to find the perfect balance in ui settings. I noticed some blurries improvements with less shadow coverage and less shadow quality... try playing around with those settings?

"Blurries" is rather generic and can manifest in many different ways.

1. PR (PhotoReal) is capped to 256 res, LC (LandClass) can go upto 1024 res ... the stark contrast between the two qualities can make one sometimes think they have a "blurry" problem when in fact they don't.  They're just observing the stark difference between a terrain tile presented at 256 vs 1024 res within close proximity of each other.  Hopefully the PR limit of 256 changes in the near future ... can't say any more than that. For PR one can increase LOD at scenery design time to present higher quality terrain tiles at the cost of huge file sizes (and I do mean huge as in not practical to deploy and almost certainly will trigger long frames aka stutters).

2.  TFR = Unlimited + high graphic settings + flying 400-500 Kts ... can result in blurries

3.  Lots of PR scenery installed and "active" ... doesn't matter what graphics settings are, they'll induce blurries (solution to only use the PR scenery you current need for flight)

4.  An problematic add-on (adapted FSX or P3D V3- products installed into P3D V4.x or just a stray BGL)

5.  A hardware problem (often related to overclocking)

6.  manual configuration settings in the Prepar3d.cfg that exceed the abilities of one's hardware

Finding the balance usually requires lots of testing specific to one's hardware and add-ons and how those add-ons are configured.  What you want to avoid is pegging your CPU and/or GPU at 100% Utilization ... if you monitor multiple cores and see one or two other cores maxed at 100% (that aren't the primary core with main sync thread) then its a good indication you have a problem that will trigger blurries.

If you search AVSIM the topic of blurries has been discussed frequently with solutions and/or work-arounds.

Cheers, Rob.

That would be interesting.

Too much OC will cause CPU throttling and/or system instability, which might cause blurries...

How do I know when your CPU is throttling? Trying to see if 4.4ghz is too OC.

Use cpu monitor program like Core Temp to watch your core temps.

Try staying below 80 degrees Celcius.

HWiNFO64 has real time monitoring that will show you whenever throttling events are triggered.  Pending your MB/CPU you can also set the throttling limit in BIOS/EFI ... for my 7900X I have it set to 105C ... at 5Ghz see occasional peaks of 80C under extreme loads.

Cheers, Rob.

Yes, but if implemented, scenery PR file sizes are going to be very large ... LC is still the best option and will be for some time to come.  I keep hoping vendors like Orbx and others provide options in their scenery's to use LC rather than PR.  I've seen a few vendors do this and allow for LC rather than PR for terrain surrounding the airport (LC looks so much better).  For those of us using TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9 or 10 the LC options looks much better even if not entirely as accurate as PR.

If you want a good look at stark contrast between LC and PR here is a sample from NZQN:
