Please don't hate me, but another Boeing would be boring.

There's even more automation andso less to do in an Airbus...so what does that leave?

Not much to choose between Boeing and Airbus regarding automation these days, apart from the 737. The same would be true with an Embraer, but the extra interest would be in different design philosophy and flight management.

An MD-11 would be nice though. Has anyone said that yet? 😉

I'd love to see the A330 or 777-200ER done, but that's just me and my love for (KLM) long hauls 😃

KLM has the 777-300ER, so you should already be happy man!

Oh I definitely am, with the 747 too! But the Airbus Widebody is a bit of a gap in the market right now.

Most Boeings can be flown from V1 to retard with less then one minute of total time hands on controls, regardless of flight duration. It seems unlikely that Airbus could be even more automated then that but it is not the automated parts of flight that interest me. It is the philosophy.

At one extreme, being able to fly a C172 means you can fly anything, at the other, being fully proficient on a B737-600 doesn't necessarily qualify you to fly a B737-800. For me, I prefer mastering the philosophy behind the design rather the detailed steps of the procedures. I know how to fly modern Boeings (to my satisfaction), and while differences exist between them, the fact they share the same philosophy makes it quite easy to go from one to another, so I would categorize the differences as quite minor. I know (knew?) how to fly an MD-11 which although it uses the same basic controls and instruments, had a very different philosophy, which meant I could not (easily) step from one to the other and maintain a high standard of piloting. The JS-41 had a completely different philosophy again, remember how much fun you had learning to fly it right? Or even just learning to start its engines? I don't know the philosophy of an Airbus, I have never flown a sufficiently detailed sim to be able to learn it and I suspect having a whole range of Airbus's would be just as boring as the whole range of Boeing's currently is, but Airbus is not the only choice!

In addition to (or instead of) the Airbus family and staying with modern tubeliners, there is a huge range of regional jets to look at. Planning a 17hour flight is fun for some, but a bad weather hop from city to city with failure rates turned up high is every bit as much fun, and more accessible to most. Planning a three or four stop out and back (typically of most pilots working day) is possible in the 737, but normal in a CRJ or Embraer. But you have to learn to think differently. Fun.

For this kind of flying in the 737, I enjoy emulating Southwest operations, since they do not use the same hub and spoke system so common with other airlines.

For this, FlightRadar24 is invaluable, since you can follow a specific aircraft by its registration number, rather than flight number. An example is N226WN, which is a 737-700. Today, November 5th, it started its day in Fort Lauderdale, where it arrived the previous night from Baltimore. Then on to Philadelphia, then  St Louis, then Los Angeles, and finally ending the day with an overnight in Milwaukee.

Tomorrow, the aircraft is scheduled to fly to a completely different set of cities one after the other - with no single leg much longer than 2.5 hours.

Sometimes SWA flights keep the same flight number through several stops, other times it changes throughout the day. I doubt that the same crew that started this morning in Ft. Lauderdale will finish tonight in Milwaukee, but if one wanted to spend an entire day following the schedule from start to finish it can certainly be done in the sim.

The only problem with this system is that any substantial delay at an intermediate stop will propagate down to every succeeding flight - but Southwest seems to make it work.

I enjoy this more than the typical out-and-back of the hub and spoke system.

Looking at Delta CRJ-700 N604SK for today for example, it’s scheduled to be in and out of Detroit 4 times between the first flight and the last.

Thank you very much... I've spent way too much time trying to follow a specific SWA bird using FlightAware.  My first one to crack was KMAF KDAL KLAS KRNO and if you can keep up and do three segments in one day on a simulator my hat is off to you.  Unfortunately, my home base KCRP only has SWA service to KHOU and that bird usually goes off to KLIT, with very little variation.  KCRP is so far out of the way that we are the only destination in the SWA network without a direct flight to KLAS... so if you want to fly anywhere on a SWA bird start in Vegas.
