A whole (Intl) Airport just to myself, but with a catch...

Recommended Posts

I'd picked up SEQU from AS Airport SALE, and tried it today. This (old) Quito airport was permanently closed in 2013 (had been in operation since 1960). It had to be closed due to many risks such as (a) being one of the highest-elevation airports in the world, it already has high-altitude operation risk (b) surrounded by enormous (volcanic) mountains requiring very steep angle of approach (c) inability to handle increased traffic volume, and (d) located in the middle of a dense city. There were several notable accidents prior to its closure.

As I was checking the precincts of this historic airport on a personal tour, frankly, the eerie silence was a bit overwhelming - with absolutely no souls around and no airport movement at all - almost like a ghost-city or a Hollywood-set. Below are screenshots from the airport (with 1st Person Bob as my Guide). MS's (Orbit and World Travel) Airlines. however, seem to have missed the closure notice! The Orbit A321 Captain appeared to be looking at me and Bob, and wondering what we were doing there, and, of course, the feeling was mutual...I thought I also briefly saw a service vehicle moving at a distance (or it could be just my imagination).  I have included a few in-the-air shots around this airport to show the cramped (17/35) runway. In the last shot, my TBM is about to be secured in a hangar (that I located at the far-end of the airport - no shortage of hangars here) - with the moon overhead showing up for comfort. But, I was thinking, maybe, I should get back in the air and fly over to the New Quito airport (SEQM) only 8nm away! NOTE: The old Quito airport is now the Bicentennial Park, where people ride bikes on the runway and enjoy a wide variety of activities on the grounds. Nice! Thanks for viewing. How did you find it working in V4. From here it all looks great.

Thinking about picking it up..

Cheers

Ah, they forgot to switch the lights off...

Nice idea; pictures have a very special atmosphere.

Darren: Please hold on! I had picked it up a long while ago (btw, I've recently come back to FSX (actually FSX-SE - as indicated on my post-prefix) after a nearly 4 years hiatus). I checked on AS now: it says system compatibility is "FSX/SE/P3Dv3.2". Please double-check, but it's not for V4.

Harald: Yes, I too was glad they, at least, left the lights on...🙂...I like to fly around the Andes range due to its amazing terrain and the extreme elevations, but I lacked an operating base (too far from anywhere!), so I thought this historically interesting airport in Ecuador (after all, founded on the ruins of an Incan empire city) will give me a foothold on this continent...Also of interest to note are the Galapagos archipelago (of the Darwinian fame) located off the Pacific coast (a province of Ecuador)...

Same here, I used to fly to/from Quito quite often. But loving it a little more crowded, I decided - in terms of AI traffic - to leave the regional flights at SEQU and to move only the long range flights to SEQM. I hope simmers forgive me due to my lacking accuracy.
