FSUIPC - Brake Assignments and Skidding ?

Hi Folks,

Looking for some insights on how to improve my situation - I have rudder pedals but I can't use them comfortably at my desk so they're off the table... So - I do use FSUIPC - I have two buttons and a single joystick axis available for braking... Some aircraft require differential braking in order to turn effectively... What I've done is use FSUIPC to assign both the left and right brake to the single joystick axis - this allows me to smoothly apply my brakes without skidding but doesn't help me with turns... If I assign the two buttons to left and right brake respectively via FSUIPC - it negates the axis assignment - so it's an "either/or" situation - so I can either assign the brakes to the axis or the two buttons - not both... When I use the buttons - I have no control over pressure so the wheels just lockup and I have these massive skid marks on the runway... Any suggestions on how I might improve my situation with the given hardware ?

Only when you press them. The next axis movement a very short time after releasing them will operate instead.

Those assignments are operating the same way as the . key does for both brakes. Just dab them, in brief presses. Then they shouldn't lock the brakes. Those controls operate with a timed increase in pressure.

To get genuine differential braking using the axis controls you could have a Lua plug-in which switches left / right both depending on those two buttons, and use the same axis / lever for all three modes, just holding the appropriate button down at the same time as operating the lever.

Hi Pete,

Thanks so much for the response - LOL - I wasn't expecting to see you - here...

I'll gladly move this discussion to your forum - the above sounds IDEAL - with the caveat on the "how to" of implementation... I'm fairly fluent in UNIX shell scripting however I've never written a LUA script...

Appreciate your time and I'll start a post on your forum when I get a few minutes...

Shame you can't work out a way to use your rudder pedals even if it means getting a different desk. I can't imagine what it would be like to fly without rudder pedals.

I have assigned differential brakes with fsuipc by defining a free slider of my X52 for this purpose. It is very easy and it works perfectly with all my a/c.

But maybe this not what the OP asked for.

LOL! I know what you mean. My problem was my knees kept hitting the bottom of the center drawer making it uncomfortable to use the rudders. I cut the drawer to an inverted U shape - room for knees and still can use drawer plus I get to use the rudders.

Hi Bob,

Yeah - I've actually flown for so long using the micro thumb joystick on the CH Throttle for my rudder - it's become second nature... LOL - Thankfully I don't get mixed when reverting back to the RW... Even with space - the CH Pedals aren't comfortable and seem difficult to get smooth realistic operation...

I am able to use my Saitek rudder pedals as differential brakes, by using their toe-tip function.   Basically, if I use my toes to push the top of a rudder pedal forward, it activiates the differential brake for that side, or both if you do both at the same time.  Don't you have that capability with your pedals?  Isn't that a realistic way of doing it (more so than using some axis)?

As Pete said, it's all-or-nothing braking force, just like a keystroke would be, but with practice I can (usually) do it without skidding my aircraft off the runway.
