August 22, 200619 yr I discovered this neat airfield (KNSI) the other day. It is 75 miles off the southern California coast, past Catalina, Clemente, and Channel Islands. Depart any SOCAL coastal field (I prefer KSBA), tune the NBD, level at about 3000ft, and stick your nose out the windscreen. Just when you think you've left civilization for good, she appears on the horizon. The 10k foot rwy is especially nice to see on a cloudy day, through a little break in the clouds when you were second guessing your navigation, radios, and fuel. The rwy is right along the island coast and the published NBD approach is a little unusual.Trouble is: The island is bare and no traffic. In reality, this outlying naval airfield (NOLF) is buzzing. It sports a radar, military hangers, combat aircraft, etc. It is a major military training facility that supports missle and drone testing at nearby Pt Mugu. The runway even has arresting gear at either end for training purposes. The navy owns the whole small island and the area is restricted airspace. It uses it for warfare exercises and classified ops. One just gets the feeling as one approaches that you better have a good reason for being there... here's a link: http://www.militarymuseum.org/NAASSanNicolasIsland.htmlI wondered whether anyone knows if a scenery has ever been developed for this. None here at AVSIM (an old AFCAD from Fs2000 is all I found). I added a few parking spots to the field (nice tower already there and in the correct location) so I'd have a start locations. After doing that, a few GA AI started showing up (must be included in the Traffic 2006 flight plans). This would be a great project. Small, self-contained, and could be completely devoted to military objects. I'd love to see some static combat ac, cargo, hangers, helos, barracks, oil drims, etc. Maybe a carrier offshore. Pearl harbor-like feel to the place.
August 22, 200619 yr I was involved with a "landing" on that island once, but it wasn't one anyone could walk away from. High speed cameras all over made for some impressive video.scott s..
August 23, 200619 yr Cool scott. i read that they run some pilotless drone and missile tests out of there.
August 23, 200619 yr That they do. That they do.Scott...967 wouldn't be a hull number, would it? August 23, 200619 yr No, though I did know some of the commmissioning wardroom of the DD 967. My experience with SNI is from my time at Pt Hueneme.scott s..
August 23, 200619 yr Ah. August 24, 200619 yr Hi Cowl FlapsTook your advice and flew a USN Boeing 737 from Santa Barbara (KSBA) to KSNI. Very interesting Entered dense fog on the descent and was about to abort when the runway perched on the edge of the cliff appeared. Thamks for sharing the infoRegards RoyEx-RAF Jet Jockey"Wrists like bands of steel and eyes like chips of blue ice!"
August 24, 200619 yr >I discovered this neat airfield (KNSI) the other day. Thank you for the info!Interesting place to visit.http://members.tripod.com/Airfields_freema...ificIslands.htmI also added some parkings and I now have GA Traffic too (UT). I made a small flight plan for a Navy C-9 shuttle between KNSI and Naval Air Weapons Station Point Mugu. This would make a typical project for the DBWY Team.PC
August 24, 200619 yr That was a great link PC, Thanks! Wow, the place was even more interesting and secret than I thought! Cowl
