[RESOLVED] P3Dv4 crashing when selecting approach on GPS

Recommended Posts

Whenever I select an approach on the default (so no add-on) GPS in any plane for NZNP my sim stops responding. I've only seen this behavior on this airport so far.

Things I've tried to solve this:

  • disabled all addon scenery
  • updated P3D's navdata
  • removed p3d config file
  • disabled all addons

AppCrashView reports this:

I select an approach on the default (so no add-on) GPS in any plane for NZNP my sim stops responding. I've only seen this behavior on this airport so far.

The only default GPS I know about in P3D is the G1000.  Were you flying the default Carenado aircraft?

Interesting; with the G1000 it works. There's also the GPS 500 (pop-up window in most non-g1000 planes) and on that one the sim crashes (stops responding) when I select an approach for NZNP.

Update: the crash also happens on the Carenado planes with the GNS 430

Don't think so as it does work with the G1000 which I assume uses the same navdata. And updating did not resolve the issue either.

Steps to reproduce:

- start a new flight
- plane: Beech Baron 58 (default one; the G1000 version does not have this issue)
- location: NZGS, active runway
- OK (start flight)
- shift+3 to bring up the GPS window
- press "direct to" button and select NZNP
- then click "proc"
- then "select approach" (the only option available)
- now the approaches for NZNP are shown but the sim crashes (not responding according to windows)

Make sure you are starting up P3DV4 with Admin Privileges.  Back in the FSX days, when you loaded an aircraft, it asked you if this gauge or an aircraft could be trusted.  P3D does not do that.  I always recommend right clicking P3D.exe, selecting Properties, then click on the Compatibility tab, then look down at the bottom and make sure the program is started as an Administrator for ALL users.

Thanks but that's what I'm already doing unfortunately.

Edit: maybe someone can see if they can reproduce my issue by following the steps above?

I did this test and had no trouble with the default GPS 500, but, I use up to date NAVDATA through FS Aerodata (requires a Navigraph subscription too).

I do remember in FSX some airports in the Pacific Islands having the same kind of issue, so its not a new issue to me, and not exclusive to P3Dv4.

You may want to try test out a free method of updating NAVDATA to try and get past this issue:

I did this test and was able to reproduce.  My navdata was from the 1810 cycle and currently updating and will try again once updated.  I doubt updating the navdata from the 1810 to the 1811 cycle has any changes in NZNP airport data.  Obviously there is a bug in the GPS500 for this area.

Awesome. Thanks for checking this out. Glad I'm not the only one.

I updated using Aero Sors and that did not fix it for me.

Aero soars does not update default GPS's, FSAerodata does update default GPS's. Lots more than approaches updates including airways, communication frequencies, airspace, sids/stars too.

Excellent customer service as well.

Just tried it in FSX and the same thing happens.  Updated to 1811 cycle for both sims.  Ran Make Runways too.  I see Orbx has a payware version of nzgs https://orbxdirect.com/product/nzgs.  There is also a freeware version for New Plymouth -  https://riddlezinteractive.com/sim/nznp/.  Maybe this make it work.
