Are we being fair to the RTX 2080?

Recommended Posts

If you own a 1080TI and run 4K then this does not affect your upgrade plans. For those of us with a 980TI or less running 4K then that may be a different question. I was just looking at a couple of benchmarks for 980TI VS 2080 cards doing 4K gaming. The bottom line was the 2080 over all games tested show that the frames rates double between the two. Now yes I know that P3D is different and there is more to the story than frame rates. Looking at the cost of upgrading to a 1080TI (new) is about the same as a RTX2080 and all indications are that the 2080 is slightly faster than the 1080TI I am not sure why it is dismissed out of hand. Using my own situation with the 980TI running 4K and a second touchscreen monitor as an example, how is that so bad? Am I missing something?

I don't think you are missing anything Sam. Getting a 2080 over a 1080ti also makes sense because the 2080 includes the new tech that can be utilized as software is upgraded to take advantage of it. Who knows how soon that will occur with flight sim software though. By the way I have an identical system as yours, a 3770k at 4.5. I had a 780GTX but my 4k monitor was maxing out the GPU usage at 100% often. Since upgrading to a 1080ti I haven't seen the GPU usage exceed 60% even at max settings. However at max settings my FPS is in the teens due to the aging 3770k which is now the bottleneck. I was planning on upgrading to a 9900k until reading about the excessive heat so I am now considering an 8700k. I will be keeping my 1080ti with whatever CPU upgrade I go with. If the 1080ti becomes a bottleneck on the new system, only then will I consider a 2080ti. Looks like I am back on the hamster wheel.

Thanks. The performance numbers look very much in line with what I had seen but I wonder about the price between Overclocked 1080TI and a 2080. I was looking at newegg today and I sure dont see the prices of the 1080TI to be much lower than 2080 in fact in most cases they were higher. Their price data seems to be off??

Yah can also search ebay, where people like me are selling their old cards........ Often for very cheap. Just don't get robbed.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Yep but I just dont want to buy a used card. You never know what you are getting into. It's not really about the price as much as putting out 1500 or more on a card that may be worth about the same price as a copy of windows me by the summer or 2019. My 980TI does an ok job with my kind of flying but I am asking 2 much with 4K and an extra monitor that is touch screen. I may be wrong but I don't think for a minute that even a 2080TI will be powerful enough to do any justice on P3D using RTX. It may be that everyone is using it in 5 years but it is just not going to happen soon and not at all with the equipment we have now.
