P3D v4 : New rig, new hopes...

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I won't ask how P3D will run with my new hardware because nobody really knows the answer yet. 😄
Will it be a huge gap jumping from a 6700K to a 9900K? I don't know...
Did I make the right choice on components? Well, I believe so after reading (and learning) a lot on that matter.
It took me around 2 weeks to carefully choose and order the following:

CPU: i9 9900K
Mobo: Asus Maximus XI Formula
RAM: 32 Gb G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 4000MHz CL18
GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 2080Ti XC ULTRA GAMING
PSU: Corsair AX1600i
Water-cooling: Alphacool Eissturm Blizzard Copper 45, 3x120mm (Very reliable German company)

My present setup is a i7 6700K o/c @ 4.8, Maximus VIII Formula, 32 Gb G.Skill "RipJaws 5" DDR4 3200MHz CL14 and I've already improved overall smoothness and FPS last month when switching from a GTX1080 to the RTX 2080Ti.
What I expect now is to reasonably reduce stutters and maybe increase some settings like shadows, traffic and other CPU dependent features.

Will tell you in a week or so!
😉

Best regards,
David Roch

Just wanted to point out that your new build will actually have higher-latency memory than the old one.  Your present 3200/14 RAM has 8.75 ns true latency, which is still quite good.  The new 4000/18 RAM is 9.0ns memory, actually about 3% slower.  Not a huge difference, but why not use what you've already got?

I just upgraded from a quad 7700K at 5 GHz to a hexacore 8086K at 5.3GHz.  The extra two cores made a difference in smoothness and allows more autogen, higher LOD radius etc.  I think you'll like the 9900K for the same reasons.

I’m pondering doing the exact same upgrade.  Any improvement in FPS?

I use a 55" 4K TV @ 30Hz, with VSync on, so my frame rates are/were locked by hardware vsync at 30 fps before/after the upgrade.  The difference for me is a significant reduction in occasional stutters that used to result from the fps drops below 30 fps that occurred during scenery loading (e.g. when crossing tile boundaries).  Having four physical cores available to handle those workload spikes instead of only two makes a marked difference.  I also think that the faster RAM I'm using is helping with autogen loading.

In P3D Bob, do you set frames to 30 when using hardware vsync ? I am about to do a major upgrade with a 9900K and 2080 ( a 2080Ti will blow my budget unfortunately ) I have a LG 43UD79 43" IPS panel, with option for 4K @ 30HZ.

No, P3D's internal frame rate is set to unlimited.  VSync on with triple-buffering enabled, and the TV is set for 30 Hz.  As long as I don't configure things too aggressively to the point where I start having frame rate excursions below 30, it makes for the smoothest config I've ever had.

@David Roch Your new PSU would have 1600W, unless you plan to build up a small bitcoin mining farm, isn't that a bit too much for a usual gaming rig? 😂 On which resolution do you run P3D? I'm also planning on upgrading my 1060 to a 1080TI, despite it's already hugely overprized. I expect major performance improvements in terms of clouds, anti-aliasing and dynamic lighting. To be honest, in the current situation it would probably be the best to wait for P3Dv5 which will hopefully bring a lot of code optimizations (for example, performance of dynamic lighting is a joke at the moment...)

+1 on hoping for Prepar3D optimizations in P3Dv5.  I'd forego any new features at all if they could just make this sim run faster on current hardware.

I second Sebastians comment about the PSU, what the heck are you going to do with this rig, power the whole house? ;-) Unless you have extensive external hardware using power from the PSU via USB Connections and stuff, 1600W is totally oversized. I still use my 580W PSU, with an overclocked i7 8700K and an overclocked 1080Ti. No issue at all, 600W for such a setup is by far sufficient.

Then I also second the comment about RAM timings. FSX/P3D still profits from fast RAM, but not only regarding bandwith, but also timings (latency). Those 4000MHz modules usually buy bandwith at the cost of latency. 4133MHz CL17 would be the modules to go if you really want he best, 3200MHz CL14 is the best compromise between latency and bandwith.

I have fractal PSU 650W on my rig and it's more than enough. I just upgraded to 8086K (which was shortly cheaper than 8700K), tuned to 5.1 ghz. I am more than happy.

As always please fly into egll with ai on and using ornx England in a payware aircraft and see how you get on.

Then fly into uk2000 Gatwick and youll be able to make a nice cup of the 🍵 while you wait for the pause on landing.

Then raise a ticket at LM, uk2000, and orbx and youll see Jack has changed.

I dont really get it, Pete, on what post or discussion do you comment on? The scenario you mention is the absolute worst case, but what does it tell us? Nothing. You can easily set up the sim as such as the performance for your worst test scenario is acceptable, all you then have to do is: can you get along with those settings for other, less heavy scenarios? If yes, fine, if no, P3D still offers the presets making it possible to use lower settings when flying in and out of heavy scenarios such as EGLL with AI traffic compared to VFR flying over ORBX country side regions with small GA airfields. You can even switch those presets on the fly.

The point in making is it makes zero odds on buying a super duper set up the sim is still based on a 20 year old engine which still has the egkk pause and terribly optimised London area both of which LM have never addressed neither did aces when they where around. Sure it looks better and doesnt oom but you still can't fly into Gatwick or Heathrow without issues no matter how many 2080s you got in sli, no matter what the psu wattage youve got or whatever affinity mask you set. I have dreams that one day I'll wake up and Gatwick and Heathrow have been fixed.

This video shows the pauses perfectly it's horrendous.

Watch it from 1 min 20 onwards.

When the old gsx was out people mentioned for YEARS there was an issue with new foundland and ctds.  People said we where mad for even suggesting there was an issue.  Then gsx2 came out and the issue has gone.

Same with london its an an absolute sink hole that no one wants to address.  Just like the newfoundland CTD that had 20+ pages. Not once did LM step into help Umberto resolve the issue.

Spot-on, Pete. Precisely valid points. With you on this, but at the end of the day, we're free to purchase what we want, even if we're deluding ourselves, we will have Nirvana.
