I Give Up! I Can't Start this Falcon 50

That was the copilot making popcorn in the microwave!

Is the trim supposed to make that popping sound? That's pretty strange. Sounds like it's coming apart.

Sure is!  Listen to this actual Falcon 50 takeoff starting at about the 5:30 minute point.

The trim in motion sound is generated electronically by the same audio system that generates other warning and advisory sounds like overspeed and altitude alert. All Falcon 50 and 900 models use that sound for horizontal stabilizer motion. I’m not sure if later models like the 7X do...

Wow!  I'm going to have to get used to that.  Someone on the video must have asked about it too.  I heard the captain say "That's the trim".

You'd think they could have made a more pleasant / friendly sound for that.  Like a chime....ding, ding, ding.

I think the MD80 bull-horn trim sound is friendlier 😊

How are you supposed to know if your cockpit is coming apart? "Oh, don't worry.  That's just the trim.."

It’s not quite as loud in the aircraft as it appears to be in the sim - especially when the aircraft is in flight with engine and air noise in the mix. You hear it most during initial climb when the pilot is hand-flying, and making constant minor trim changes as the aircraft accelerates through the flap retraction phase. Once stable in climb, and with the autopilot in control, it doesn’t sound all that often. Maybe a few pops when capturing cruise altitude.

Also, the stabilizer moves at a constant speed in the real aircraft, so the individual clicks always come at a constant rate. The trim in the simulator appears to move faster the longer it is applied, so the repetition rate of the pops speeds up and slows down.

Dassault is somewhat inconsistent in the quality of other digitized audio alerts. I currently maintain several 900EX models, which have exactly the same trim clacker, overspeed warning and altitude alert as the 50.

On the 900, if you advance power levers to takeoff position with no slats or flaps deployed, you hear a crisp and clear female voice with an American accent saying “No Takeoff”.

When you do the stall test, you hear a male voice with a heavy French accent saying “Stall Stall”, except it sounds more like “Stool Stool”.

The funniest one is the autoslat warning. A different male French accented voice. He’s supposed to be saying “autoslat” but it sounds a lot more like the words represented by the initials “W.T.F.”!😁

If you go to the Aircraft Options popup (Shift+2) there is a 'Volume Control' for the trim sound so you can turn it down if it is driving you crazy. The new setting will not be retained between sim sessions, however.

Now that's funny.  Anyone flying with me would be saying that all the time. 😊

The funniest part is that when running the aircraft on ground power, that alert often triggers when switching the external power switch off. Everything goes dark, and the last thing you hear is that exclamation coming from the cockpit speaker...
