Flight1 Frustration - Am I the only one

Recommended Posts

Years ago I set up my Flight1 account to associate all of my licensed products with my account. I no longer have to mess with key files to unlock the installer software. It sure has made my life easier of the years.

Not my fault they went out of business, I paid for two products of theirs, rant over.

In all fairness there was a very good reason and it's not their fault that you lost your old computer.

Not to mention that they provided for people like you, so you can still download and install the Dukes now,

even into P3D v4. Type "realair simulations" into a search engine.

I tried but was asked for the email address I used when I purchased the Dukes.  But it was my old Cox account and I do not remember the email address, it has been too many years.

John

Edit: I stand corrected, they changed their download links and I was able to download and install the Dukes this morning, thank u!

I'm also not a fan of the Flight1 way of doing things. Almost every time I run into some kind of problem during a (re)install. I already have problems figuring out which option to use form the wrapper and often pick the wrong one. And way too often I have to ask for a reactivation of my key. What I really dislike is the fact the wrapper installs stuff into the root of my C drive: I seriously hate that. So if I can help it I buy my stuff elsewhere: I only buy from Flight1 if there really absolutely definitely is no other way.

Boy, I must be doing something wrong. I've bought many titles from Flight1 and have uninstalled, reinstalled and transferred to several new systems with ease.  I think the problems arise with people who don't use them often and forget the procedure or where their .lic files are located.

Are there easier methods? You bet but F1's method is still very easy.

Vic

I have never had any problems with the Flight1 wrapper system. I set up a Flight1 account at their web site, and linked all my previous purchases to it, so if I need to re-download a previous purchase, I just enter my user ID and password in the installer, and it automatically authorizes the download without my having to hunt up old purchase receipts in my email archive. New purchases made using my account ID, automatically use my stored CC info for billing.

Perhaps there are better ways of doing things, but I’ve always found the Flight1 system to be easy to use.

I do the same.  No muss, no fuss.

Interesting, I'm not actually sure to what you guys are referring, "linked my previous purchases" to your account. I can go to my account anytime I want and login, but this means nothing. One must have the installer, which I think you are referring to using the installer that you have saved somewhere? We all do this.

Also I referenced the RXP GTN. I only recently found out that F1 installs stuff (lic file, certificate of authenticity or whatever its called) to a separate folder for RXP not in the other Flight One folder on C drive. Nobody tells you this. Its nuts.

I actually AM using their installer, press the reinstall and then I have auto fill so it puts in my ID and password (in the case of the RXP GTN the fiiles are NOT located with other Flight1 files)....and that is when it failed(s). So I double check the password and its correct....so I retype and it fails, then locks you out, so you do a password recovery and it turns out I have the correct password, but you still have to do a password renewal, and/or open a ticket, wait, then correspond etc...then you do this (the reinstall) all over again. And this is just for an update, minor fixes to something already installed and working.

Bill, can you please explain, I don't know what you are talking about. "Associate" to your account.

Hi Bryan,

I'm sorry for the out-the-box experience you're having with our e-commerce procurement partner solution. Your feedback is important to us and we are trying our best to smooth out the experience, but I understand this solution didn't met your expectations unfortunately.

The e-commerce enabled installer 'HELP' button provides additional information to the process, including:

6. You will next be prompted with a screen notifying you that we are about to extract the software. The extracted software (and the original key file if applicable) will all go to a folder on your bootable Windows hard drive (usually C:\). The folder name is the same name as the company that produced the software. An option may be given to change this extraction path, and to automatically run the extracted software's setup program after it is extracted.

Please note once the genuine Reality XP GTN 750/650 Touch software installer gets extracted to this folder, you can safely move it to another location for further re-installation. You can also move the .lic file to "Documents\Reality XP".

Here is what Bill @n4gix is talking about. Create Flight1 account https://www.flight1.com/login.asp?mode=new
When installing/reinstalling enter your account info. Works like a charm.

Oh, thanks but this is nothing new, sorry. This is exactly what I have been talking about...so some here have great memories records and such and never forget one of their 1000s of passwords. And in my case I was using THE PASSWORD but got locked out and also did not know that there are more than one folder for storing lic files and certificates.

No, it's definitely not something new, but well worth doing. As for passwords, "pencil, meet my friend paper..."

LOL....Bill too funny....true, not joking, I just spend two full days dawn to dusk "cleaning" out my office, shredding, threw away boxes and boxes of flight sim manuals, forum posts, tutorials, scenery development stuff, FS2002, FS2004, FSX...and some P3D and some XP...so much so that I had to take a utility trailer load down to our local recyle depot...I am trying to remove all paper, way too much of the stuff, many I had not opened nor touched in years, and there was so much I couldn't find anything anyways. AND, I bet I have another full day to finish off.

I have gone to all digital, new systems for saving forum posts digitally, updated spreadsheets with hyperlinks to payware.

All that said hard to believe but hell if I could get my RXP update, which I finally did by getting a new password and download of the new installer.

This is why Steam and other central points of purchase/access like Orbx FTX central seem pretty much the inevitable wave of the future to me. This was obvious years ago, and while scrambling to keep up with multiple DRM solutions to restore purchases may be old hat to some users, I'm willing to bet that to the majority it looks like sheer madness.

I seem to vaguely remember Avsim stepping into the breach once upon a time and offering some sort of DRM (I think) service, but the effort seems to have collapsed so quickly that I pretty much only heard about it once and never again.

That stubborn 3rd party individualism is the hallmark of a lot of companies that just can't give up their babies, and is (for instance) why, no matter how tempting, I not only stopped purchasing from FSDreamteam, amongst others, that include Flight1, but I also refuse to install the many sceneries I did (once upon a time) purchase.

They are all carefully archived with little subfolders containing purchase info and passwords, but honestly, digging through all the various types of authentication is just too much hassle.

I had actually given up on Orbx too, until purchasing and downloading easily (echos of Steam) via FTX central came along.

This is a pet peeve of mine, and I actually have a thread or two about it here on Avsim, lost in the shadows of antiquity.

LOL! I'm in the process of cleaning out my archived paperwork as well. Do I really need to keep bank account records from 40 years ago? I currently have six two-drawer filing cabinets full of such ancient history.

As for email, several years ago I set up individual folders and sub-folders in which to archive my email, and also set up "filters" to help sort the incoming emails into rational folders.
