Weird Antennas over the whole globe

Recommended Posts

Have you determined that those antennas do not exist in the real world?

Its a graphic error. I have seen this sometimes as well in some setiings combo with certain drivers. (Even in FSX)

Try default setiings to begin with and maybe another driver.

Sorry update.

I was thinking of these Black antennas like.

Thanks Michael Moe

If you are using something like Orbx Vector, which uses real-world GIS data, the antennas you see probably really do exist where you see them. The problem is that unless you are using very high-resolution land class or photo scenery, the antennas may appear in the middle of an urban neighborhood in the sim, whereas in the real world, an open field exists at that location.

AM broadcast antennas, which are quite tall, are usually located on low ground, not on hilltops, and are preferentially sited near water or marshland because of the improved ground conductivity of moist soil.

For instance, all of the antenna towers for the various high-power AM broadcast stations in New York City are located in the New Jersey meadowlands, along the west bank of the Hudson river opposite Manhattan. Some of those stations use arrays of 6 or more towers in close proximity. There are a lot of them.

I have the same eissue. This cannot be what the real worlds look like...

I think the problem started when I stalled Vector (something that I will never, ever do it again), but I have uninstalled it and these antennas are all over the US.

They look perfectly normal to me, but in order to be absolutely certain pause a flight near a few of them and then press word not allowed-Z until you see your coordinates. Once you have them, check the VFR charts for the area to see if they are on the chart. If they aren't on the charts, then something is providing bad information to the sim.

It it's Orbx, I'm sure they'll fix it. Capture the screenshot with the coordinates on it so you can post it in Orbx's forum.

Edit... Apparently, using the actual name of the 2 big keys on the keyboard that turn small letters into big ones is not allowed

The easiest way to determine if they really exist is to get a sectional or two in your real life area and compare it to what you are seeing in the sim.  The first pic is messed up in that the buildings appear to be floating so I suggest making sure your register is clean before reinstalling.

I think the problem started when I stalled Vector (something that I will never, ever do it again), but I have uninstalled it and these antennas are all over the US.

The lat/lon locations of all registered antenna structures (at least in the USA) is contained in databases available from the FCC and other sources. Basically, any antenna taller than about 150 feet AGL must be registered. For antennas close to an airport, the registration requirement might apply to even shorter towers.

Vector probably uses those public GIS records to place towers in the sim. Unfortunately, many of the registered antenna towers are probably for cellular and other mobile radio systems, which typically look more like the relatively short self-supporting metal towers used for high-voltage power lines. It appears to me in your picture that Vector is placing a full size red and white painted AM broadcast-style antenna tower at every location marked "antenna" in the GIS data - even if in reality the only registered antenna at that location in the real world might be a short 50 foot steel tower holding a single 2-way radio base station antenna for the local taxicab company or police department.

I have Orbx OpenLCNA and Vector. I know that flying around my own local area, the only antennas I see are full-size broadcasting towers that really are at there in the R/W. I don't see shorter mobile radio and cell towers.

Just out of curiousity, where were those screen caps taken? I can check in my own sim to see if I see that many towers.

Those screens are from the NY region. I was flying from KLGA to KIAD and this is about 5-10 minutes into the flight. I only have this problem in the northern east coast of the US.

It is the hazards.bgl file that causes those spikes from those and factories etc.  Its been around since version 2.0 but has never been fixed.  I mentioned it in the LM forum but nobody responded.
