Maybe he was using the default scenery? That would bore anyone to sleep.

Wonder what his co pilot was doing?  New avionics suggested, a mini taser connected to the headphones, or better yet the seat, that ATC can use as a last resort.  Should be mandatory on all aircraft.....  Or a little spray bottle above the seat, same effect, or smelling salts.  Used on me once at a hospital when I passed out from a high fever--very effective!
