To 4.4 or not to 4.4

Recommended Posts

That is the question. For all you brave souls of the 1st Saturday Flying Corps I have made the ultimate sacrifice and updated. Just the Client and Content for the moment. Guess what? The World didn't come to an end!

I'd like to report that my RXP GNS530 is happy with V4.4. and that True Earth NLD has never looked better!

And Palm Springs looks great too!

Off to a good start!

ps. Scenery pauses around LAX are still there, however..

Active Sky offers an Open Beta file for compatibility. So far, only GTN 750 seems to be incompatible.

@Ron: Did you update all three parts or only the client?

Client And Content. I couldn't see the need to do Scenery. I'll see how it goes.

3rd party or default?  You know where this is going 😉

Orbx Cal South region... no other airports any where near.

Rob,  Are you saying that only Orbx can fix this?

When we go on a multiplayer flight, we all have pauses in the exact same locations,

so this is consistent across systems.

I was hoping that some of the new settings in V4.4. might allow us to address this..

Does this happen without the Orbx SoCal scenery?

In my testing, without Orbx SoCal, I don't have any pauses, actually I think even with just FTX Global maxed out it still doesn't happen, specific to something in Orbx SoCal ... there was similar issue with Orbx NorCal, I think it was a dock model that was triggering pauses and/or drastic drops in FPS.

In the scenery library, uncheck the add-on 😉  But seriously, I think the only way to get this fixed is thru Orbx and even then, you'll probably have to ID the specific model or models as the root source which can be very difficult.  You might get stuck in a finger pointing loop ... LM's fault ---> Orbx's fault ---> LM's fault.

On a side note, do you have AI road traffic and boat traffic > 0?  In addition, I think there might also be a problem with AI road traffic boundaries which Orbx SoCal expands on.

Alternatively, I have noticed that some the Texture allocation settings have helped reduce 3rd party scenery pauses in "some" cases (not all) ... have  you looked at my thread here?  Might be something in it to help, but be careful with the SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE value, above 64000 and FPS can start to suffer especially at SoCal.

Cheers, Rob.

I am sure this is only with Orbx SoCal enabled.

Will try your suggestion!

I'm thinking I'll just wait a bit to see what folks are saying but its going to be inevitable that I will update.

So far nothing bad has happened. In fact it feels better. Don't ask me to qualify that statement though. It may just be a placebo effect.

VR on the other hand, a few little improvements. A marginally better mouse usage and a few more options, but not enough to get me to return to VR in P3D. If, one day, it gets to be as good as DCS then I'll be back. I can't see it being any time soon, I think the scenery we all use is too 'intense'. So I'll be sticking to 'pancake view' for P3D. Shame.

Went all in with a complete uninstall of the previous version and all new install of 4.4. Apart from Active Sky not working (yet), all seems well. 🙂
