John Assuming this is a "return to form" after the disaster of their last game (X:Rebirth) and similar to the previous X3, it's not really a Wing Commander type game. There is combat, but also a major focus on building an economic empire where you own ships and build space factories. Basically a spreadsheet management game combined with the cockpit experience. There is some appeal in that, and I played the earlier X games up to the point where the factory stuff got tedious and I bailed out. This series is famous for being very buggy on release, but they do eventually fix things (except where the design itself is flawed, like in Rebirth). Don't expect much from the combat. The enemy AI has been brain-dead in the past, and early reports indicate it hasn't improved much, if at all, in this new one. it also looks like egosoft is still spending too much time on the "walking around a space station" thing, which I'm not sure that many people really want in a game like this. Anyway, I might try this after the first slew of bugs are patched, see how far I get with it. A game in development you might want to keep an eye on is Rebel Galaxy: Outlaw. It looks similar to the Privateer type game of the past, fairly lightweight and not taking itself too seriously. I played the first Rebel Galaxy game and it was okay, although more of a 2D battleship shooter than the cockpit experience most of us are looking for.
