A New Long Haul 787 Flight: Auckland to Chicago

Recommended Posts

Why kord?? Surely they can't fill it?

I'm guessing it doesn't have the range for NYC and KORD works for interlining with united with star alliance

I still remember the man who heard "The flight for Oakland is leaving"  The busy gate agents let him board and fly on, a flight to Auckland.....

Glad I was not on-board.  I've been on at least one 12 hour flight in a 747 and that really got uncomfortable at the end (Japan to Minneapolis).  I heard the 787's are more comfortable though!

Now all I need is for PMDG to develop a 787 series. In the mean time my PMDG 772LR can make that trip with ease.👨‍✈️😀

Totally!!!  They so should have done the 787 instead of the soon to be dead 747!!!

It barely has the range for NYC and if you arrive in NYC low on fuel and end up in a holding pattern due to congestion you could end up running out of fuel, other airlines have ran out of fuel in NY before due to congestion. Chicago doesn't quite have the same congestion and has good alternatives like St Louis or Milwaukee.

They have said they want to do a NY route down the road when ranges improve but Chicago is a great start in that direction

And yes Air New Zealand's alliance is with United and Chicago is a United Hub so that plays a factor too.

As far as the 787 goes it loves distance, another long flight is YMML Melbourne to CYVR Vancouver, Air Canada AC38 14hr 21min, I flew AC36 Brisbane YBBN to Vancouver 13hr 5min in July, that was long enough for me. There is no joy in mega long flights seated in economy.

My wife and I flew a 787 on United last year in first class. It was the most comfortable flight we’ve ever been on. Flying back on a 777 in first class was not nearly as nice as the 787. I will say the upper decks on the UPS 747-8f’s are nice but again, nothing like first class on the 787.

Yeah, flying on first or business class on long hauls is ALWAYS a lot more comfortable than coach. For people like me who can’t sleep sitting up, being able to lay down is a big plus.

Interesting, one man's First is another's Business:
https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/United_Airlines/United_Airlines_Boeing_787-900.php
If accurate, not in the same league as the ANZ 787
https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Air_New_Zealand/Air_New_Zealand_Boeing_787-9_V2.php

But the B777 is way better appointed for passenger spoiling than the 787, and the ANZ herringbone layout is hard to beat.

Of course, if one is talking First Class, then the Asian and Middle Eastern airlines truly understand the meaning of the word. Best exemplified by the Large One flown by Emirates. You could probably go some hours in this one

You are right one mans first is another’s business. In my case, I was with my wife so United’s 787 was awesome. If it was me alone on business I’d like AIr New Zealand’s layout

Nice! I'll take two please. On a link down that page is a brief story for one of the most unusual names for a little girl. Her first name is Abcde (pronounced "Ab-sid-e"). The sad part is that a Southwest ticket agent was caught making mocking remarks where Abcde could hear her:
