August 11, 200619 yr This thread needs an injection of common sense.Microsoft will have developed FSX using XP SP2. Why should it waste its time and effort testing FSX on XP SP1 or other obsolescent operating systems, rather than spending it on improvements? I don't want to have to pay more for FSX just so a few people can run it on XP SP1.As a result, Microsoft won't be in a position to give any guarantees about running FSX on XP SP1 and, sensibly, is requiring SP2 to be installed. August 11, 200619 yr Yes Ken, we only did about 7,000 - with two problems caused by unauthorized apps.Though the biggest complaint was an issue with ESPN's fantasy sports site - which ESPN fixed.
August 11, 200619 yr Moderator >I agree it is stupid FSX asks SP2 to be installed as it>doesn't need it, but stop thinking that SP2 will cause any>problem. MS is not perfect, but I still like it (well, after>disabling WGA that keeps annoying me until I activate Windows>at every format I do).Leo,What is "stupid" is continuing to insist that FSX doesn't need any of the SP2 features even after one of the devs came to this thread and specifically stated that it does... ;) Fr. August 11, 200619 yr that far south people are using Solaris exclusively so they have no need for XP SP2.
August 11, 200619 yr Hi,My main reason for not updating is that my sim computer is not connected to the net, and they don't seem to have a place to download it other than through Windows Update (must be web connected). So now I have to buy an SP2 CD (cheap, but still have to pay for it) so I can install the demo. And I have to wait 4-6 weeks...Take care,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___ Tom Gibson CalClassic Propliner Page
August 11, 200619 yr Tom - There are several places where SP2 can be downloaded. Then just burn the executable to a CD and install it on the sim computer. August 12, 200619 yr Just FYI - I did not experience any performance issues when going to XP SP2 .... you might consider moving to SP2Regards,Vern

August 12, 200619 yr >I did just install it, thanks, I have joined the crowd and>FS9 still works at least. Still trying to disable that>security center though. Using up like 20MB of memory.>Downloading the FSX demo now (again, I was so furious I>deleted my previous download). >>Regards, Carlos^^^Everyone who has complained about SP2 on here goes on about it like it MS is forcing you to spend $1000 or more. Its free... If MS had shipped XP with SP1 and SP2 built in from the start (and therefore no SPs) would you still have complained about them? Seriously, some people are going on like MS has a conspiracy against them, that MS want SP2 on everyones XP so they can rule the world or something? Now, I'm not one to stand up for MS (I use Linux myself) but I find many of the arguements against updating a little petty and immature (can I point out here I am not directly referencing anyone here, nor the quote). What is the problem with 20mb of RAM been taken up by a process you can stop if you want? They're are already loads of threads like that in many operating systems and software, they providing services you don't want or need but still using your resources... developers have to cater for everyone and if you don't like that then go and commission someone to build software specifically for you, otherwise just disable what you don't need. Besides which, most anti-viruses alone use over 20mb of RAM, I just don't see what the big deal is when most people have over 1GB of the stuff, it's not even 2%. People thay obsessed with performance (and we're not talking noticable performance here, we're talking small figures. I can imagine some people here getting all exicted when they increase there framerates from 50 FPS to 55, they wouldn't even know whas it not for the on-screen counter). If you are that obsessed with performance as to get all heated up over 2% or less of your RAM, then you'll be running some high-performance PC anyway so the impact will be even less.If you can get seriously angry over such a petty little thing as 2% of nothing, then you need professional help before you seriously injure yourself or others. It's no different to the goverement forcing you to have a catalytic converter on your car... it hits performance a small bit but its better for everyone.Sorry to be rather blunt in that post but having just read this entire thread I needed to be as angry as some people can get over 2% unnoticable percent of their system RAM being taken up by something they can turn off anyway ;-) . ckyliu, proud supporter of ViaIntercity.com. i5 12400F, 32GB, RTX4070, more in "About me" on my profile.
August 12, 200619 yr Hi,Thanks all. Didn't realize you could use the network installer to install on a single machine.Of course now it's Saturday and I'll have to wait until Monday to download it... August 13, 200619 yr I don't use antivirus and haven't in a looooong time without catching the flu, only firewalls. Anyways I did notice a slight performance decrease after I installed SP2. A slight lag when opening programs and definitely a longer boot time. Nothing big, but definitely there. This is after disabling the security center and other services. I haven't had time to test the myriad of software I have with it but FS9 appears to run pretty much the same as before as far as frame rates. I noticed a lot of stutters with the FSX demo, especially whith autogen very dense(wow it looks great with very dense)but I don't think it's related to SP2. To all of you who like me are leery of installing SP2 I say well it didn't kill my computer(s) but unlike some say does seem to have a "footprint" so its up to you. Just make sure you make a restore point just in case you wan't to go back to SP1. To the group that says everyone in his right mind is running service pack 2 I will say this. I went to work today at Baptist Health, the hospital chain I work for and whose computer systems house private patient information. Guess what, they are only running with service pack 1.Regards, Carlos
