Is a FMC Expansion a possibility?

Recommended Posts

The pictures of Falcon 50 cockpit layouts all have an older fmc could you do this as an expansion? I have not found a GTN being used in this aircraft just a Collins fmc. I am a flight simmer that likes to fly very realistically using as real world as I can get. Thank you.

There are a few real world Falcon 50s that have do indeed have GTN750s, but most use variants of the Universal UNS-1 FMS. There are some equipped with the Honeywell GNS-XLS

Dassault did not offer an FMS as standard equipment until the production of the Falcon 50EX, but I think almost all 50’s still operating have been retrofitted.

Unfortunately, creating an accurate FMS is not easy. There really aren’t really any good, accurate models available for flight sim that can be adapted easily to generic FS add-ons.

The UNS-1 model found in the Majestic Q-400 is extremely close to the real thing, but that is tightly integrated into that one model, and can’t be used anywhere else.

I believe it was the well-known developer Ernie Alston who created a very accurate GNS-XLS FMS for the original PMDG J41 (FSX version), but that can’t be upgraded for 64-bit P3D, which is why the new J41 (if it ever comes out), will use a GTN750.

I used the phrase expansion pack to say I would pay for this fmc to be added meaning a coder could create the fmc and be paid for it. The cockpit pictures I find online all have a Collins fmc.

Online photos of Falcon 50s with Collins FMCs would be the 50EX variant. (The last 100 Falcons produced were the EX model).

Creating an accurate flight sim FMS system is no trivial task. It would require a coder who specializes in that area of avionics emulation, and who has a thorough mathematical background.  If done from scratch specifically for something like the analog FSW, it would probably require a couple of years development time minimum.

The Universal UNS-1 FMS would be the one to emulate. The real UNS FMS system is designed primarily for aircraft that did not have FMS originally, and it is actually more capable than many of the FMS systems found in larger airliners. The current UNS-1E is capable of LPV approaches, RNP approaches, and in some cases, can give VNAV capability to an aircraft that never had VNAV originally.

I would be delighted if a developer with the necessary skills would produce a truly accurate UNS-1 add-on that could be easily interfaced to a broad variety flight sim aircraft that have no current FMS, but I just don’t see that happening. For now, the only add-ons that can fill that role are the RXP and F1 GTN or GNS emulations.

We tried to hire Ernie who knows how to code an FMC and he said it would take him about 7 months and it was costly. Also when it came time to talk prices he dropped off the planet and even his FB page has not been updated since 2 years ago. Good luck finding a coder that can produce and FMC. Even if your willing to pay someone i am not sure we can find someone. You can try posting on FSDeveloper.

I think I saw a mention on another forum a while back that Ernie has pretty much retired from FS development.

The problem with the Collins FMS found in the Falcon 50EX is that it goes hand-in-hand with the rest of the Proline 4 system, which has electronic PFD and ND displays. Most of its functionality would not work with analog instruments even if one were to simulate the FMS itself.

The real Universal UNS-1 is the “Swiss Army Knife” of FMS systems. It can be configured to work with analog flight instruments and autopilots, and can also drive digital electronic flight displays. It will connect to about a dozen different kinds of aircraft fuel quantity and fuel flow measurement systems, and has performance software  to work directly with multiple models of Honeywell TFE731 engines, which is why the UNS-1 is so often found in Learjets, Falcons etc that had no FMS originally.

I will post a question at the Majestic forum to ask if they have ever considered breaking out their implementation of a Universal UNS-1 FMS as a stand-alone product. If they ever did, it would probably sell well. My fear though is that it is so tightly integrated with the external custom flight engine used in their Q400, that it can’t be made compatible with generic simconnect functions found in aircraft built with the standard FSX/P3D SDK.

Thank you for trying. Ernie is on the Qualitywings team I am sure he is busy. Maybe you can buy the fmc expansion that Carenado uses in their biz jets if not too expensive. If no other options I'll buy the Falcon and enjoy using the GTN. I have not purchased a gps after upgrading to P3D yet but I'll buy the GTN and enjoy it in your Learjet that I own.

The Carenado FMC is like the default GPS that flight sim has and is not a real FMC.

Hi Folks,

Yeah - LOL - my pet peeve - the Carenado FMC - that they've actually charged EXTRA for - that can't perform a simple DTO without blowing away your entire flight plan (like the default GPS it's based on) - - - no thank you...

Regards,

Scott

I have not used it before, did not know that!

ISG Gauges just updated to P3D v4 compatible!

They have been P3Dv4 compatible since mid-2018 at least.  I know this because I've been using Ernie Alston's ISG FMC in P3Dv4 for at least that long, maybe longer.

Hi guys,

Why don't you use the FMC in Ernie Alston's ISG gauges? I use the GNS XLS fmc in Ernie's package in the Lear 35.

The ISG gauge set works great and is also compatible with P3Dv4. Available from SimMarket https://secure.simmarket.com/ernie-alston-integrated-simavionics-group-1-(isg1).phtml

Because that is not the correct FMS for the Falcon 50 or the Lear. We already have Ernie writing a custom Universal FMS for both products. We just tested a test version a few weeks ago. We will put out expansion packs for these products so only users who do not want an FMS do not have to pay the extra fee. Next we have to write a new HSI so all the info can be displayed like a moving map and other info. The Falcon we might create a Multi function display unlike the lear which will only have the HSi display. So some good news for those who want realism.
