PBR - Kyle was not kidding

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

In a post from the "Update Update. Yes, that sounds redundant." thread from RR, Kyle mentions that painting in PBR may be tough.

Well, his exact words were..."the PBR additions to the livery are something to the effect of 5 layers deep. This isn't a click on a button of "re-render for PBR." This is intense work."

I'm here to tell you from 1st hand experience that "This is intense work." sums it up pretty well.  For those who don't venture far from this forum on Avsim, you may have missed my postings regarding this new world painters will paint in now.  Links to the posts are below.

What I'm telling you is that with PBR painting takes on a whole new level (5 to be exact like Kyle mentions, if you count all the extra layers and channels we have to work with now), especially bare metal...and this example is from a livery I already painted, and was "merely" converting to PBR. .  On a side note...not sure if its a placebo effect from staring at metal for so long "updating" this paint...but my bare metal, non-PBR PMDG 747 looks better and more "metallic" in P4d 4.4. Can't wait to put a real PBR effect on her! (Note: She's still a WIP, so please ignore the obvious flaws in the paint).

Oh, and this may be the best PBR-related post to date...

The model also needs some changes, I think, in order to properly show the textures off in their true form. For this reason, the PBR work won't show off in true form until the model accompanies it.

[Again: disclaimer, I did neither texture, nor model work for us here, so I'm going off of things I've seen about the difficulty.]

I though i imagine the change... i noticed that in other repaints, different aircrafts.   So, whatever they did with V4.4,  its  really another level.

Well, ill keep those words for PMDG updates release day... 😎🍻
