Ran out of RAM - How to assess causes/fix?

Recommended Posts

I was flying P3D v4.3, Win 7, in Europe this morning when I had the screen freeze with the 'Not enough RAM' message.

I use Simstarter to cut back geographical loading & have Startup pared down & UTL dialed back.

Are there any apps/pgms that can be run so that as I am flying I can pause the flight & check what pgms are using the RAM?

Any suggestions for freeing up RAM?

Thanks

Hey there, T45.  Before anyone can assess this, it would be good to add your PC specs in your Avsim signature.  You can use the format in my sig as a guide... but in the end, folks will be asking about this in order to help solve your problem.

you don't say how much PC or GPU ram you have.
right click on the task bar and select task manager, choose the processes tab and sort on memory.

at a guess I would expect textures to be the culprit, either P3D settings or weather but who knows?

I suspect this may be VRAM what GPU do you have.

I agree... it's going to be VRAM.  64-bit applications technically don't run out of memory... not when it can address 16 exabytes (18,446,744,073,709,551,616).

...unless you calculate all of the perturbations of the Death Star.  Let's be technical here.

I think they still can once you use up all your RAM and virtual memory swap space (on the disk).

Ok... the entire v4 installation is only 30gb in size.  My virtual memory is 16gb which is half the sim's disk image.  I could go on and on... but trust me... they didn't run out of virtual memory.  When your virtual memory fills, the OS will warn you when you start to run low... you don't get a message saying you're out of memory first.

What exactly is this:

the screen freeze with the 'Not enough RAM' message.

??

Not the same message... clearly.  When it runs low on virtual memory a dialog pops up with a message that says "Your computer is low on memory."  Here's a screen shot of how it would show up:

That looks like it. P3D shut down when I hit ok.. (I'll try & check the message by re-running the flight)

Basic spec:

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.50 GHZ; 16GB RAM (4 x 4GB 1600Mhz 64 Bit DIMM); NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB;  3SSD's + 1 WD HD (1TB); Win10 HE

Not sure if this is relevant but it has happened twice flying Paris to Amsterdam with QW 787. Flown same route in GA, no problems. Same Scenario set up/configuration &  add ons  for all the flights.

Your OP indicates you are using Windows 7 but your specs show Windows 10 Home Edition.

Error in OP. Its Win10 HE.

Spent yesterday running every cleaner I have on the PC.

Ran the QW 787 Paris to Berlin this morning with out a hitch.

What I am particularly interested in is is there an alternative to Ctrl/Alt/Del: Task Manager to be able to assess what programs are using RAM during a flight?. Or VRAM? & the magnitude.

That dialog isn't from Prepar3D and wouldn't shut any software down when you click the OK button.
