My new PC build

Hi guys,

Here is my new build for P3Dv4 and TS2019; any comments welcome, good or bad.....

I hate to say it but I don't like it.  IMO swap the AMD (not enough clock speed) for a 9600K or 9700K Intel and ditch the 1070's in SLI. SLI works but is messy.  What kind of budget are u looking at?

S'okay; the AMD is a choice I made on the basis of multi-threading capability, and the re-use of a 1070 is a compromise reached with my wife, who has said I can upgrade the graphics later in the year.......

Flight simulators generally perform better when the CPU can manage better single threaded performance.  Multi-threading is important, but single thread performance is generally the priority.

Good move the compromise with the wife... that always yields best results.

My i7-9700K doesn't go above 4.8Ghz at high core usage. At these speeds 500Mhz doesn't really matter all that much and it's 25% cheaper.

I would think 500 MHz would make a very noticeable difference.  Intel has a slight edge in IPC as well.  I would think u could get more out of your 9700K.  Mine runs steady at 5.1ghz.  If it is a cost issue a 9600K is a very good option.

You're welcome to experiment and downclock by 500Mhz. My 9700K is set to run at 5.1Ghz when 1-2 cores are active but it will go down to 4.9 or 4.8 at higher active core counts.

I'd be interested to see some benchmarks comparing Intel and AMD at similar price points.

No need to experiment.  I always test before and after my overclocks.  With my settings its the difference between a smooth 30FPS and a jumpy 26-30FPS.  I think the Ryzen 2700X is a tremendous value.  But I am not going to leave that much clock speed on the table.

Using the 2700x myself. Works for me. Turn of SMT in the Bios, you will thank me later.

If you are using the RGB Pro Cosair Vengeance Ram , just be warned the lighting effect does not work on X470 chipsets as it cant edit the XMP profile. Learned that lesson the hard way, no review site actually mentions this.

Have you tried syncing all cores rather than per core? 9700K generally does very well syncing all cores. 4.8 on all cores as posed to 5 GHz on all cores is no big deal though, minuscule increase in frame rate. Just wondered if you had tried all cores out of curiosity.

HaHa I already have a cunning plan! I'll sell my drone, the cat, and a few other bit and bobs; buy her an electric blanket and a GTX 2080 for me....If I drop GBP 1100 on a GPU you can guarantee I'll be doing a lot of solo niteflites - in the garden shed, and Mrs. Trabant will be cozy and warm in bed with the door locked.....

ROFL!  Yes, it's something like that here with Mrs. Lownslo... we call it parity.  I build a number of computers each year on spec, so usually there is computer stuff laying about my office.  Yet somehow She knows when I'm building one for myself, and that's when the parity rule kicks in.  I built a new one for myself last fall, and sure enough within 3 weeks of firing it off the first time She bought a new lappy.  It's just a coincidence that the lappy cost only a few $$ less than my build. 😁
