Performance when moving from 1080p to 1440p

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am planning to move from 1080p to 1440p. My systems runs the fslabs a320, P3dv4.3 very well at 1080p. I average 40fps on aerosoft EGLL with most settings at highest levels (i use 30hz vsync, so its very smooth without any hickups or stuttering). My system specs are 8600k at 5.0ghz, gtx 1070 (ocd to 1070 ti performance), 16gb ram.

The big question is...how much of a performance hit will i take on moving to 1440p on the current system? Will the 1070 handle 1440p and maintain 30fps with the fslabs a320 specifically?

 Thanks

Since you have an Nvidia card, what you could do is enable DSR and add a 2560x1440 resolution. Select that in P3D and you will know exactly how it would run. 🙂

My thread on same topic a few months ago: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/535210-1080p-to-1440p-on-p3dv4/?tab=comments#comment-3839895 I got about 20% lower FPS with my GTX980. You can see my specs in "About me" on my profile.

You can use nVidia DSR x2 to simulate the performance hit moving from 1080p to 1440p before you buy a monitor (and x4 will take you to 4K), you will then be able to select resolutions in excess of 1080p in P3D and see if you get any drop

Much will depend on how aggressive your AA settings are.

If, by 1440p, you mean 2560x1440 (16:9 aspect ratio, vice 3440x1440 which is also 1440p but at a 21:9 AR), I would think the 1070 should do OK unless you're hammering the card with AA workload (e.g. trying to run 4xSSAA with dynamic lighting)

FWIW i use a GTX1070 in 1440p (paired with an i7 7700k) and am quite happy with the performance.

Same here - have a 1070 with a 9700K at 2560x1440 without issues.

Cheers!

Thank you all for your replies. I tried Nvidia DSR, the fps hit wasn’t as bad as i thought it would be...just 4-6 fps. I’m making the leap towards 2560x1440.

That was my experience when I jumped to 2560x1440. I have a 980 Ti which is roughly similar to a 1070 IIRC.

I am running 4K with 1070 and 7700K. Performance is acceptable with FSLabs most times. I think you'll do fine with 1440p.

I can possibly offer a reasonably definitive answer, as I performed a before and after test a few years ago when moving from a 1920x1200 27" Dell monitor across to a 2560x1600 resolution 30" cinema Apple monitor, which incidentally is superb. If anyone is thinking of jumping to a screen of this size, do yourself a favour and save yourself some CPU power by avoiding the jump to 4K. You really will not see any difference at this size. Anyway, as for performance, when using the exact same settings, ie, locked at at 30fps, at Orbx Anacortes, which I always used as a test bed, with the Dell 1920x1200 fps=27/28  with Apple 2560x1600 fps=23/24  so I guess a hit of about 12%. The hit was far lower than I had expected. I mitigated the performance drop by simply making a few small adjustments with traffic sliders. I'm not suggesting that this would be the same with every rig, just giving you some kind of real world comparison.  I think my sim at that time was a Sandy Bridge 2500@4.2Ghz with a Nvidia GTX 1070. 😊

That’s good advice and the same conclusion I reached when researching where I would jump to from 1080p.

I use a 32” monitor and 2k is perfect.

Sure, just for info if anyone else is interested, that Apple Cinema 30" 2K display was the finest monitor I have owned!

Sorry for the off topic, was thinking about a 32", what distance do you watch it from? Would 30 inches distance be enough, or is it too close? Thanks in advance.

The screen is about 20” from the edge of my desk, and I tend to sit with the arms of my chair right up against the desk so I’d guess I’m in that range.

I remember wondering the same thing and if a 27” would be enough but I have no such concerns now 😀
