Flying Down to Rio

Flying Down to Rio

Starting from Campos dos Goytacazes (SBCP) the first leg is over flat fields to Macae (SBME), the center of the offshore petroleum industry.  The route continues south and west with the Atlantic on your left and the Serra do Mar on the right. The Serra do Mar is a system of mountain ranges and escarpments that forms the boundary between the sea-level littoral and the inland plateau.  Next is São Pedro da Aldeia (SBES) and then on to Rio de Janeiro.  UTGAX is the initial approach fix for our visit to Rio de Janeiro. Fly past Sugar Loaf on your left and do a circuit around the city to appreciate the many fine views before landing at Santos Dumont (SBRJ).  Winds permitting we will attempt the fun and challenging circle to land 02 approach. Departing Santos Dumont we will fly over Botafogo (to the right of Sugarloaf – please don’t hit the cable car) and out to the beaches of the Copacabana and Ipanema.  I am told the sight-seeing opportunities in this area are outstanding. The route continues down the Atlantic coast with stops at Angra dos Reis (SDAG) and Ubatuba (SDUB).  Our penultimate stop is the Port of Santos (SBST), the busiest container port in Latin America.  The final leg will require a quick climb over the escarpment of the Serra do Mar and then on to the largest city in South America and our destination São Paulo.  We will land at very busy Congonhas Airport located on high ground surrounded by buildings in the downtown district.

Aircraft
The route is 363nm and the theme is vintage propliners.  The PMDG DC-6 or A2A Connie would be very appropriate but good choices would include any aircraft capable of cruising at 210-220knts.  No propliner, the King Air or even Citation Mustang will work but as always you are free to fly what you like. Be advised, there are a couple of airports with shortish runways (3000ft) and tricky approaches.

Scenery
Orbx South American Landclass Recommended.  Paulo Ricardo Rio de Janeiro / São Paulo if you already have it. (This is FSX payware photoreal scenery that is very good but requires special fixes to work in P3D)  The announcement screenshots show this scenery.

Just some mood music. The Girl From Ipanema. With photos of Rio during the era as several contemporary depictions of Heloisa Eneid Menzes Pae Pinto (the actual girl).
