Need help to run 2x 4K NVSurround in 2x 2K

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Does one of you know if there is a way to use a lower resolution with 2 monitors in NVSurround ?

I now use 4K tv’s and while first the framerate was able to stay at 25 it now drops to 13-14 with Dutch winter weather + AI aircraft + TE Netherlands.

As far as I have seen it the 2080Ti is continuesly running at 100% ( gpu ). Probably because 3x 4K is like 12 2K..

I am able to choose 1920x1080 per display, but the moment I choose NVSurround for 2 monitors I am getting 7680x2160 instead of 3840x1080. It seems that NVSurround automatically switches to 4K .

Any idea as buying 2 extra 2080Ti is out of financial range at this moment ( just bought another electric car )...

Thanks, Gerard

I would try view groups if you are going that low on the resolution. My 1070 back in the day could handle 3x1080p at 30 FPS so the 2080ti should be fine for 25fps in viewgroups.

Gerard, be aware that if you run any monitor at less than the native resolution the quality of the image will be compromised, perhaps substantially.

I’m currently flying FSL Concorde 32-bit on a UHD monitor at 1920*1080 and despite it being half of the original in each axis the vc panel is nowhere near as sharp as a native 1920*1080 display.

LATER: I found this guide as to why upscaling will never give as good results as a native monitor irrespective of how good the monitor is and mine is good.

Hi Ray,

After having set my left display to 2650x1440 , AF to 8x ( before 16x ) and AA to 2x MSAA the load dropped to 70-95% depending on the scenery.

However, a new issue occurred : when flying over the Adriatic Sea near Greece ( RWS PR scenery + AG ) towards Turkey the scenery starts to get blurry and cannot recover. A reload scenery results in a hang up.

At that moment the main core is around 84% which is good, but all 6 terrain cores are at 100% !

That I have to solve. My feeling says that an extra 2080Ti will not solve this.

Hi Gerard,

I'm not familiar with NV Surround but I know Pete Dowson is running 3 projector screens fed by 3 1080Ti cards and if he is careful with settings he can get 20-25 at EGLL with around 100 Ai.

Trying to run three screens from one 2080Ti is asking a lot. All I can suggest is maybe changing resolution on the two outer displays to 1920*1080 and see if that helps. Or just start saving.

@Ray: Good call ray.

(from my site)

Upscaling: When choosing a large display we might want to choose a lower resolution than that monitor to enable high performance of the simulator and use the monitor upscaling to provide a still (hopefully) reasonable image.

In order to do that, the hardware, monitor or GPU can interpolate the average of the pixels in the source image onto the destination image. This produces a softening of the image even if that new image is a direct multiple of the source; for example 1 pixel mapped onto 2x2 will still be interpolated as shown in the image below:

upscaling.png

The image on the left is the direct upscale without interpolation, the image on the right is indicative of the result on the larger monitor. (Interpolated images are constructed with software that uses first principle techniques - codelegend.com).

My BenQ monitor does have several options for displaying how a non-native resolution is displayed. One is 1:1 which fills the middle quarter of the screen with precisely 1920*1080. Lovely and sharp but only a quarter of the screen.

I have tried other options but the most satisfactory is Full which interpolates the signal. It’s okay. Not brilliant but useable.

There is an option in Nvidia CP to select which of the display or GPU controls the signal. Best to choose the display as it gives you extra options.

This makes sense to me but how do I send a 2k signal to my TV and have it upscale to 4k? I don't know if I have seen an upscale option even though it seems all TVs have one.

Usually images are scaled to fit the TV screen automatically, same as we see fattening with old TV shows spread to fit the width.

I thought NVSurround (NVS) created the native surround resolution (here 7680x2160) plus a bunch of lower ones you could choose from in the drop down list in NV control panel. Selecting a lower per monitor resolution before setting up NVS will not affect what NVS creates. It's awhile since I've used surround though.
