Advice on second GPU

A friend of mine has just very kindly given me a GTX570. I run a pretty good setup with P3D v4.4, a 1080ti on an Asus Z-170 motherboard running an I7 6700 @ 4.5. I currently run the GPU with a 4K 43" monitor with a second small 15" monitor for extra panels. Disabling this monitor has no effect whatsoever on the performance. If I had two additional 19" HD monitors, would it run them both alongside the 4K? It seems a shame not to try and take advantage of a second GPU in some way if at all possible. My question is, what could I use this second GPU for, if at all?

The one thing you have to bear in mind the primary GPU slot is 16x8 the secondary GPU slot is 8 when you plug in the two GPU`s the primary slot will drop to 8  giving you 8X8 lanes single GPU 16 lanes, how this will effect performance on the 1080ti  is something you will have to find out, this is why SLI never really took of.

Okay, Howard, let me elaborate. There was a time, I think during FS2002-04 era of the flightsimulator, when sims did not have the kind of airports and sceneries we have today, when Orbx was just a whisper in the wind, when Active Sky, Rex, etc, etc were just mere dreams away, so the emphasis was on graphics cards doing all the rendering of textures, bitmaps,etc, etc. As the sims developed to FSX onwards, like the days when mobile phone handsets would require a weight-lifter's strength to lug around, so too as sims technology/code/science developed at a rapid rate. Hence the emphasis switched to CPUs now doing all or most of the hard slog. Thus, as Raymond has explained, SLi configured graphic set-ups became a thing of l'passe.

I'm keeping fingers crossed I have more or less summarised the right things

Ah, OK. Thanks for the concise explanation Rick, appreciated.I thought it would be good if there was something I could use the second GPU for, but I guess not. Never mind. Thanks again.😉

Raymond, yes mainstream intel cpus have 16 lanes the difference to run 16x16 compared to 8x8 is 3-4% with 2x1080ti

x299 cpus for example 7820x 28lanes 79xx series 44lanes, i run 2x1080ti on a 7920x 16x16 lanes ,16 lanes on each gpu

the pcie lanes have very little if any reason for way sli never took off, more the price of two gpus and driver issiues apps that is not sli compatible, x-plane not support sli

p3d v4.4  support sli , and it give a boost look at Rob.A test 2x 2080TI in p3dv.4 , its another thing if its worth it cost a lot.

Howard, yes that should work but run the vc on the 1080ti and panels on second card

 

edit. have a system on a open testbech and 2 x1070 , did some tests with single card X16 compared to X8 was 0.03% gain with X16

there's no reason I can think of that would get me to shove a GTX570 into a PC which already has a GTX1080ti in it. potential problems with old hardware, power requirements, driver instabilities, software compatibility.
sure, it might work... it might also toast your whole system; hardware, software or both.

Howard, also consider that the latest Nvidia driver that supports the GTX570 is 391.35 (for both Win7 and Win10). Any driver from Release 396 upward don't support it. This would create a limiting factor for your 1080 TI.

Did some tests for you, nvida new to older tricky need the same driver version but AMD cards no problem with old cards down to that they support win10 

main display samsung TV 40inch 4K 

secondary displays 1920x1080 and 1680x1050 both 21inch to make it more fun 2x1920x1080 works great, resulutin no problem

driver 418.81 

main 4K cards 1070,1080Ti,2080TI

work with this as secondary with  2 secondary displays  nvida: 1080Ti,1070,1060,980,780,670 cards that i have.

tested old E210 nvida not work need 342.01

AMD: R9 290 , HD6790 2 secondary displays, HD5450 one display, support most of the AMD cards but i dont have many AMD cards.

Did this just for fun and clear things up, the easy way is to use a AMD card as second card you not need to think what nvidia driver that support the old card ( ex nvida stop support 600-700 series)

Wow matey, that was pretty concise! So from what you say, if I wanted to actually set up two extra displays at say, 1920x1080 then I could do so by using a GPU like the 1070? I could run these side by side with my existing 4K 43"? Thanks again for your help, appreciated.

yes, i have the 4K as main monitor 

tested P3D run on 4K monitor  then undock the fmc or RXP GTN  750 autopilot radios and drag them  to the secondary monitors.you can run active sky or PFPX   had webbrowser open  on the secondarys
