Unfortunately, the weather conditions have forced authorities to call off further search and recovery efforts for the time being. The body of Mr Ibbotson will remain on the Channel bottom for the nonce.

I’m sure that must be an auto-correction you missed. Nonce is a disparaging remark used towards homosexuals in Anglo-Saxon.

I've always known that you folks are somewhat odd, but why you would abandon the venerable, ancient* definition and usage of a perfectly innocent word is beyond strange...

Since third grade I've always used "nonce" with the ancient meaning of "for the time being" ...

* 1150–1200; Middle English nones, in phrase for the nones, by faulty division of for then ones for the once ( Middle English then dative singular of the1; ones once)

😀 I got the British meaning slightly wrong but it's still not a word you would use in polite company over here. I've never heard it used in the US context.

We have lots of slang. A cigarette is also known as a f*g which I certainly wouldn't use over there. 😁

But, the US meaning of the word came from England to begin with! I gather you didn't read much Chaucer in school.

From: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nonce

Quote

Nonce first appeared in Middle English as a noun spelled "nanes." The spelling likely came about from a misdivision of the phrase "then anes." ("Then" was the Middle English equivalent of "the" and anes meant "one purpose.") The word was especially used in the phrase for the nonce, meaning "for the one purpose," as in Geoffrey Chaucer's "Prologue" of Canterbury Tales: "A cook they hadde with hem for the nones To boille the chiknes with the marybones." The adjective "nonce" did not exist in print until the publication in 1884 of the New English Dictionary on Historical Principles (which later became the Oxford English Dictionary). The editor of that dictionary, James Murray, created the term "nonce-word" as a label for "words apparently employed for the nonce."

I suppose that since the actual usage of the word dropped to near obscurity over the centuries (see the graph in my post above), there was no one to know that the coining of the acronym "NONCE" was murdering this innocent adjective!

Don't forget the sister word of 'nonce', 'ponce'! In the US a place near where I live is actually called that.

You learn something new every day. No, I’m afraid I didn’t read any Chaucer either at school or afterwards. The acronym is actually quite inoffensive when you see how it was constructed.

Many words have fallen by the wayside or have been ‘adopted’ by others for quite different meaning. Gay being a classic example.

😁 Plenty of other unusual place names in the world. I’ll just link to this site rather than name them as they’d never get past the filter! 🤣
