I've always known that you folks are somewhat odd, but why you would abandon the venerable, ancient* definition and usage of a perfectly innocent word is beyond strange...

Since third grade I've always used "nonce" with the ancient meaning of "for the time being" ...

* 1150–1200; Middle English nones, in phrase for the nones, by faulty division of for then ones for the once ( Middle English then dative singular of the¹; ones once)

😀 I got the British meaning slightly wrong but it's still not a word you would use in polite company over here. I've never heard it used in the US context.

We have lots of slang. A cigarette is also known as a f*g which I certainly wouldn't use over there. 😁

But, the US meaning of the word came from England to begin with!  I gather you didn't read much Chaucer in school.

You learn something new every day. No, I’m afraid I didn’t read any Chaucer either at school or afterwards. The acronym is actually quite inoffensive when you see how it was constructed.

Many words have fallen by the wayside or have been ‘adopted’ by others for quite different meaning. Gay being a classic example.
