It's a lot more fun when you take more control over it. I often do flights without vnav or lnav being used at all. The MCP is very powerful and ready to do your bidding. Also those foreboding massive FCOM manuals, especially FCOM 2, are actually a lot of fun to read when on a long cruise. Feel the POWER! 

Glad you are getting braver. It's worth it!
