FPS drop from 45+ to 3 within an hour

Recommended Posts

Nemo, I have posted the CPUID HWmonitor readouts for the temps further up the post, also the CPU is not OC, it just turbos up to 4.5 Ghz when P3D is running. Again have posted the task manager processes when the FPS drops in P3D and the CPU,Memory & GPU are not overly stretched. Thanks.

Scanned each line and couldn't detect anything out of the ordinary.

So, no clue here...🤔

Hi, As I said in my last post that even with just a fresh install of P3D + one addon airport + NGX + UTL and no other scenery or AI programs, I still had the problem. In all of the AI programs I tried including UTL I only set traffic density to no more than 50% and other P3D settings at very modest.

John.

Try with no AI , so UTL disabled, the one addon scenery disabled and a default aircraft...

All sliders to medium.

Framerate locked at 20, so no Unlimited + Vsync.

in the past, to even reinstalling windows and then reinstalling P3D with maybe only one addon airport, NGX & UTL, and still got the framerate hit.

What I do is strip back the sim to stock, and do not put anything on till I tested it to make sure it is not some kind of other problem maybe, rather than expect some kind of addon not working right.  At least, those ones should be OK. But as Gerard says set the thing right down the scale until there's no cores topping out.

Hi, Thanks guys for all your suggestions, I will test some, but as I said before, I have tried various configs, and because I have had this problem for six or more months, I have reinstalled P3D many times with very little config settings. The thing is I can run P3D all day at around 40 FPS using addon airports, Active Sky, addon Aircraft + Static Traffic, the problem starts when I enable a A.I. traffic program, i.e, UTL, TG, AIG etc (any moving A.I.). I know frames will drop a little when using these programs, I wouldn't mind a 10 frame drop, but it does not stay there, over time FPS keeps on dropping, and as seen in previous screen shots down to 6fps after running for an hour. When the drop gets bad say around 20, if I disable UTL in the P3D menu, FPS will come back to around 75% of what they should be, the only way to get back to my 40+ FPS is to reload P3D.

As already stated, to exclude hardware problems, with MSIafterburner/Rivatuner you can observe CPU and GPU usage via On-Screen-Display (OSD) during flight. IMO it provides a more realistic picture than CPUID HW monitor.

I ran into this last night. I landed at KBOS and parked at A29. After deboarding and shutting the NGX all the way down, I left the room to make dinner. FPS were at about 22. Sim time was Monday morning at 6:30AM. Lots of AIG traffic. The airport was almost full. About 45 minutes later I came back in the room and noticed that the FPS were sitting at a pretty solid 2.3 (yes - two point three). Resource monitor showed minimal CPU usage (i5-8600K @ 4.8Ghz w/5.0Ghz turbo - air cooled @ 55C). First core at about 45%, the other 5 sitting almost idle with small blips. GPU usage on the other hand was at 100%. GPU-Z showed my GTX 1060 6Gb operating in state P0, 100% utilization, but NO bus activity. This makes sense given the CPU usage. So... I think the GPU is running instructions that were already loaded and it simply hasn't finished doing whatever it was. I saved the scenario and exited P3D. I was surprised to discover that this scenario loads up to 2.3 FPS every time. This gave me an opportunity to play with it. What I have found is that by disabling the HDR lighting option, and then immediately re-enabling it gets me back to 21+FPS every time. It does not happen immediately, though. My scenario loads in locked spot view. After cycling the HDR option, I need to switch views and a couple of times to 'unlock' it.  It is repeatable on my system. I just did it 3 times in a row.

I think maybe HDR lighting set the GPU off on doing something that it's taking forever for it to do. I haven't tried, but I suspect that if I left her alone for another 45 minutes, she'd be back at 2.3 FPS.

If you still have the offending fxml: Can a change of plane allow loading to normal. Can the fxml be loaded normally with no weather. Or can it be loaded to normal when the scenery is stock in that location?

I'm curious which OS and video driver you're using.  Also, did you happen to get a look at what your VRAM usage was when this happened?

That was a great question. It made me curious. I loaded up the scenario and it started at 2.3 as usual. I changed to the Robinson R22 and FPS went to 8.1. I switched off HDR, exited the config dialog, and then switched views and looked around. The FPS went right up to 26FPS where I have it locked. I went back in and turned on HDR and FPS stayed at 26. It is obvious that HDR is working as I can easily see the difference when I re-enable it. I am not hallucinating. I swear.

I reloaded the scenario and then saved a second copy of it. I restarted P3D and loaded the copy. It also starts up at 2.3 FPS with the NGX. I changed to the Piper Cub. The FPS went from 2.3 to 3.5 (can the R22 really be less of a load than the Cub?). I saved the scenario and restarted P3D. I loaded the saved copy and it started up at 3.5 FPS with the Cub sitting at the gate. I did the same routine with disabling HDR, switching view and looking around until the FPS come back to 26, and then re-enabling HDR. It works every time.

I haven't tried it with Flytampa KBOS disabled. I suspect that it would load up just fine, though.

Since it is so easily reproduced, I just checked it with GPUz.

Upon initial load, 3721Mb . After 3 to 5 minutes of sitting idle at 2.3 FPS it increases to 4806Mb and holds steady. I have 6144Mb so there is still some head room available.

OS Name    Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Version    10.0.17134 Build 17134
Adapter Description    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
Driver Version    25.21.14.1935

I just got an "Out for delivery" text for my new RTX 2080Ti, so it should be here shortly. I'm wondering how it will do when I load this up. It has 11Gb so there should be no problem at all with vram.

Is  there a .wx loading along with that fxml? Probably makes no difference, but worth checking.

There was. I appended ".off" to the filename. It made no difference at all.
