Bahamas Scenery Pack 2-1 Beta: New Providence (Nassau)

Recommended Posts

All,

I have posted scenery for New Providence Island (Nassau) for download.  This is the first part of Bahamas Scenery Pack 2: Western Bahamas.  I decided to release it as a beta release so that you enjoy this area now, instead of having to wait for the whole W Bahamas pack to be complete.    This pack includes new vector, land class, water class, and static object scenery for New Providence/Nassau and a replacement for the default Lynden Pindling International Airport.  All static objects are taken from the default object libraries in P3D.   This is a beta release so please let me know how it works.  I would be especially curious for feedback on how Aerosoft's Nassau X International airport, meshes with this scenery for anyone with that product.   Also, grab Bahamas Scenery Pack 1-3: Northern Bahamas + Turks and Caicos if you don't already have it.

Should be available at this link soon (uploaded last night):

Hi Greg,

Very nice, great job.

One thing I found, I have Aerosoft's Nassau X installed and it all fits together nicely, only thing is, I have 2 control towers, identical, side by side, opposite the terminal.

Turned off Aerosoft, and they are still there.

Hope it is an easy fix.

Thanks for the great work.

Chris.

Chris,

Glad to hear that the Nassau X works.   I'd love to see some screenshots.

Re the two towers... The scenery pack I made only has only one tower, you should not see two.  Since you are seeing two, that suggests to me that P3D is loading two overlapping scenery files.  The key is to figure out which files.   The culprits could be 1) my new MYNN (Nassau Intl), 2) the default MYNN, or 3) the Nassau X MYNN, or 4) any additional MYNN addons you may have installed.  When P3D has multiple scenery files for the same airport, it loads them in the order they appear in the scenery library list such that whatever is higher on the list is loaded above the others (e.g., 2 is loaded above 14).  Normally, the airport scenery that is highest on the list will suppress all the versions below it.  So, if Nassau X is moved to the top of the list (use the up and down arrows in the scenery library window), it should suppress all other versions of MYNN from displaying.  If that fails (e.g., you are still seeing objects like the extra tower show up in the Nassau X scenery) you can also tell P3D not to load other versions of the MYNN scenery.  To do that, just uncheck the box next to  "New Providence Apts" scenery folder in the scenery library list.  (note This will stop both Oakes Field and Nassau Intl files from loading).  Repeat this for any other MYNN airport scenery you want to turn off.  If after doing this you still see an extra tower, the only remaining culprit would be the default MYNN airport.  To keep the default MYNN scenery from loading, you have to search for MYNN  files in the Scenery/World folder and either add an extension like ".hide" to them or move them to a backup folder.

Hope this helps.

Greg

Hi Greg,

I found the offending file at ORBX \ FTX_OLC \ FTX_VECTOR_FixedAPT \ Scenery

And the file is APT_MYNN.BGL

I just changed the extension and all is Ok.

Thanks for your help Greg, love the scenery.

Chris.

Hi,

Wonderful stuff. I'm looking forward to trying this!

How is it possible that this scenery is only a few Mb large? Just wondering.

Thanks

Excellent question!  You are probably asking because commercial scenery products can be hundreds of MBs.  These commercial products are large because they typically include high resolution satellite imagery as well as lots of custom objects which also have associated image files.  While satellite imagery provides high levels of realism, it is not practical for covering large areas of the globe (for several reasons).  Because of this, P3D, like FSX before it, takes a procedural approach to generating global scenery. Basically, what this means is that the scenery files I am creating are instructions for P3D to generate scenery  using the scenery building blocks that are built into the simulator.  The default instructions (e.g., coastline and road maps, land class maps and water class maps) that come with P3D lack much detail for many parts of the world - including the Bahamas.  What I am trying to do is to replace their rather crude maps with much more detailed (and accurate) maps.

This is what is often referred to as "vector" scenery.  If you are interested, there are commercial products that you can purchase from ORBX (Global Scenery products) or Scenery Solutions (Ultimate Terrain (UTX) products) to upgrade the global vector scenery in P3D.  If you are familiar with ORBX, they also have even more detailed regional scenery that incorporates satellite imagery for more realism.

While both of these companies provide commercial vector scenery that covers the Bahamas (and much more), their products are generated from digital map databases.  And they use that approach because that is the only practical way to do it when covering the globe.  Believe me, I know!   Just creating the Bahamas scenery will take me hundreds of hours.  But, it is my opinion that creating this vector scenery by hand produces better results.   That is especially true for smaller islands where existing digital maps don't provide the detail necessary for a realistic representation.

Best,

Greg

Thanks a lot for your explanation! I do use ORBX vector and global. I also use xplane11 a lot and that uses a lot of scenery that is very small in size because it uses libraries as you probably know. I wandered if this would be the case in p3d as well.

Do I place the folders directly in add-ons folder or do I copy the content of your scenery folders directly into add-ons/scenery folder?

I copied the 4 downloaded and unzipped files you uploaded and I am asked to overwrite some files a few times ..do you provide the same files in the different folders you uploaded? Does folder 1-1 contain some files that are identical in folder 1-2? If not why does my computer ask me if I want to override stuff?

Can you explain a bit more which folders need to be copied where?

Thanks in advance!!

Jozeff

The instructions in the readme files explain exactly how to do the installation.

I place these folders in an "Addon Scenery" folder in the main Prepar3Dvx folder. But, you can place them anywhere as long as you add the location in the scenery library.

If you are downloading the Bahamas Scenery Pack 1: Northern Bahamas, you only need to download the latest version which is 1-3.  You are seeing a message about overwriting files, because each version has many of the same files.

As explained in the readme files, you need to remove prior versions before installing the latest version as not all of the older files will get overwritten with the newer version and this may cause some conflicts.

Best,

Greg

Again, thanks for the update. You might want to mention that it is necessary to disable any duplicate airport files that are part of ORBX's FTX Global Vector. Also MYXB, the closed airport on Disney's private island Castaway Cay, has a new ICAO code MYAG. It is still possible to charter flights to MYAG, even though it is closed to public landings, because it is now part of a active hiking trail. Here's some photos from Google.com:

Agree.  The ORBX FTX global vector scenery seems to have tweaked MYNN which bleeds through.   The fix is described by ChrisDa above.   I have added an exclusion rectangle to the airport and Canuck21a is testing it for me to see if it more effectively blocks ORBX scenery.  In retrospect, I should just add exclusion rectangles to all airports to prevent potential bleedthrough.  I'll release the fixes with the final scenery pack.

Thanks for the info about Castaway Cay.  I was aware of the new ICAO code, but as I thought it was a closed airport (seeing the X's on the runways and noting Disney seemed to have repurposed it for Trams and as a pedestrian walkway) I didn't bother with any modifications.   I will have to incorporate those changes.

Best,

Greg

I'd like to thank you for your work on this. To me it was a bit tedious to add,but for such a small footprint it makes those areas interesting to fly in. I found that (may be only on my setup) adding multiple areas at a time would tend to lock up P3D. So I went back to adding one at a time. No problems with that and UTL Live was agreeably adding GA flight as I flew through the islands. Thanks again as I will from time to time install the remainder of this package.

*I might add that I quit using FTX Global quite a while ago and I found I had to make no adjustments were needed to add and use your add on.
