RXP GTN 750 "Garmin GTN Trainer Stopped Working"

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

In the past three days (starting 6 April 2019), I've downloaded the following:

Garmin GTN Trainer 750 (v6.50) -- I downloaded this separately before downloading X-Plane and XP Reality Plug-In

X-Plane (v11.32.r2)

XP Reality GTN 750 (2.5.15)

I have a Dell Precision 7520, i7-7820HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz, 32GB RAM, 4GB graphics memory running Windows 10 Enterprise.

X-Plane and the Garmin GTN Trainer both work fine as stand alone applications - no issues at all. However, when booting the Garmin 750 XP Reality Plug-In with the default C172 in X-Plane, the following occurs:

1. Garmin 750 window comes up, my name appears that says it is licensed to me

2. I click "CONTINUE" on the Garmin 750 GPS window

3. The computer thinks for 10 or so seconds, then a pop-up window comes up that the "Garmin GTN Trainer stopped working", and then the Garmin 750 in X-Plane either freezes or goes black. Avionics are on, since the default GPS system is powered up.

The following is written to the log files:

rxpGTN.xpl.log --

19/04/08 05:40:48.947 13428 -    ] # win.xpl version 2.5.15.0
19/04/08 05:40:48.947 13428 INFO ]

rxpGtnSim.dll.log --

19/04/08 05:40:51.383 13428 -    ] # rxpGtnSim64.dll version 2.5.15.0
19/04/08 05:40:51.382 13428 INFO ]
19/04/08 05:41:52.982 08532 INFO ]
19/04/08 05:44:14.296 17184 INFO ]

I have a feeling either something is not pathed correctly for XP Reality Plug-in to the GTN Trainer, or something else may be amiss. I've tried running X-Plane as administrator, but that did not change anything. I've checked my Anti-Virus software (McAfee Endpoint Security), and nothing is "quarantined".

Any response will be highly appreciated. I can provide more information/perform instructions as required. I did see something about adding a variable to enable logging of the Garmin GTN Trainer. That may be my next step.

Hi,

you might want to download and install the just released v2.5.16 update to get started. From there, please review the User's Manual for information about the 'debugging' log options.

Hi Jean-Luc,

I downloaded v2.5.16 and verified it was the version I have when X-Plane started up. I also added the following to the file "RealityXP.GTN.ini" under X-Plane>Aircraft>Laminar Research>Cessna 172SP per the updated user manual (see last two lines):

[GTN_750_1]
; comma separated list of render targets.
drawto = WINDOW, PANELS
; is the master device if true.
MasterDevice = false
; aviation db: 0: nav_db2_grm, 1: nav_db2, 2: nav_heli_db2_grmn, 3: nav_heli_db2
NavDbType = 1
DebugValue = 1
LogTrainer = 1

Unfortunately, I still receive the message that the "Garmin GTN Trainer Stopped Working -- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program" as a pop-up window after clicking CONTINUE as the 750 starts up. Note that I verified Controlled Folder Access isn't an issue. Windows Security isn't enabled because I have McAfee Endpoint Security (nothing is quarantined and I verified nothing prevents applications from being opened in McAfee).

The log files say the following:

rxpGTN.xpl.log:

19/04/11 01:00:20.355 14148 -    ] # win.xpl version 2.5.16.0
19/04/11 01:00:20.355 14148 INFO ]

rxpGtnSim.dll.log:

19/04/11 01:00:23.212 14148 -    ] # rxpGtnSim64.dll version 2.5.16.0
19/04/11 01:00:23.211 14148 INFO ]
19/04/11 01:00:50.492 13864 INFO ]
19/04/11 01:01:31.787 16036 INFO ] GFX Debug: enabled.

Ever seen this before?

Bumping this thread for assistance.

Has anybody encountered the following issue?

~

Upon starting up the Garmin 750 with the default C172, a pop-up says the "Garmin GTN Trainer Stopped Working -- A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program." Afterwards, the X-Plane pop-up Garmin 750 screen either freezes or goes black.

Hi,

I'm sorry for the delay but there is hardly any information in the log to guide you to the right direction.

Can you please download and run the following, and let me know what does it report for the GTN process:

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html

Hi Jean-Luc,

I downloaded and ran the crash logger. Nothing was logged while I performed the procedures mentioned in the first post. I tried it with both the Garmin GTN Trainer operating concurrently with X-Plane and without the GTN Trainer running concurrently with X-Plane. The same "GTN Trainer Stopped Working" pop-up would appear everytime when trying to activate the 750.

One thing to note is after cycling both the GTN Trainer and X-Plane multiple times, I ended up getting an error for the Garmin GTN Trainer when trying to independently operate it:

"Error: LoadLibrary failed to load cdp.dll. GetLastError: 8".

This is odd, since the GTN Trainer worked fine the first few times times I concurrently ran X-Plane. I closed X-Plane, restarted my computer and the GTN Trainer began to run fine again on its own after start-up.

Another note is when the "GTN Trainer Stopped Working" window popped up, the Garmin GTN Trainer continued to run normally without actually stopping. It seems that this pop-up might be unrelated to the actual operation of the Garmin GTN Trainer.

Perhaps I need to download an older version of the Garmin GTN Trainer, if that is possible? Or something is mapped incorrectly?

Hi,

this reminds me another discussion on the GTN forum (can't remember whether X-Plane or FltSim) about Comodo which is typically causing this. You might want to search with the "comodo" keyword for more information.

Hello,

I deleted my Garmin GTN v6.50 Trainer and installed the older 6.20, just for kicks to see if I could get anything working.

This time, after loading X-Plane and firing up the Garmin 750 window, after clicking "CONTINUE", the window stays black. The rxpGTN.xpl.log debug log stayed the same. However, the other file spit out some hex code:

rxpGtnSim.dll.log:

19/04/28 04:08:07.648 14876 -    ] # rxpGtnSim64.dll version 2.5.16.0

19/04/28 04:09:18.582 06004 ERROR] failed bits: 0x00 0x42 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x40 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00
19/04/28 04:09:18.796 09512 INFO ] GFX Debug: enabled.

Any idea what this could be? The nirsoft.net AppCrash application did not log any crashes. The Garmin Trainer worked alright as a standalone application.

Hi,

The hex values in the log file is a false positive, unless the GTN is trying to run the trainer 6.21 while thinking it is trainer 6.50. This is highly unlikely nevertheless I'll review this to make sure this wouldn't be an edge case making some of you having the same 'black screen' symptom.

Further on this, it is most likely the GTN is trying to use a trainer 6.21 but thinks it is a trainer 6.50. Is it possible not all trainer files were replaced with trainer 6.21 files when you've installed it?

Please note both trainer 6.21 and 6.50 can be installed side-by-side and you can configure the RXP GTN for which trainer to use.

I'd suggest you review the RXP GTN User's Manual p17.

Hi,

Did a full removal of the Garmin GTN Trainer. Re-installed Garmin GTN v.6.21 and configured all the alternate paths per page 17 of manual. Did not need to install multiple Garmin Trainers since I am only trying to use v6.21, and I have removed v6.50 awhile back -- see post on April 27 above. Garmin trainer runs fine as stand alone. Did not "Configure Aviation Database Files" per page 18 of the XPReality manual (am i supposed to?).

Still have the black screen after clicking "CONTINUE" in X-Plane in Garmin 750 window.

Here are the debug files (the paths are valid in the below logs):

Unfortunately, I am reaching my 30 days in another 2 days since purchase date. Maybe some luck will shine from above.

Thank you.

I don't know why, but all of a sudden I have to start X-Plane as Administrator in order for the 750 to power on.

@FlyingGhost3 I'm sorry for the delay getting back to this discussion, I've been exploring different possibilities but I've failed to find any explanation so far but something on your system specifically causing this, most likely another application installed in your computer preventing normal execution at some point.

  • This could just be something "anti-virus" related which is choking on our software protection (are you sure McAfee is really disabled at all?)
  • This could be a fire-wall not pleased with the trainer somehow (have you looked at the discussions about "Comodo" on our forums?)
  • This could be video card driver as well and/or your configuration of the video card (do you have any 'custom' setting in your video card panel?)

By the way, what is your video card type?

Can you please try adding/modifying the following troubleshooting setting to your ini file:

DebugValue = 1
LogTrainer = 3
AudioDriver = -1
