Hi all,

At the moment I use F4-3200C14D-16GVR - G.Skill Ripjaws V 16Gb C14 and am happy with it.

I am thinking to go for 32Gb but could I get another set of  F4-3200C14D-16GVR or do I need to buy F4-3200C14D-32GVRF4-3200C14Q-32GVR

Thanks

Adding a second set of the same model of DIMMs might work, or it might not, at least without some work on the speed/timings.  If you know what you're doing and are willing to accept the possibility of having to experiment with loosening timings and/or reducing clock speed, then you can go that way.  A matched 32GB set is more likely to be trouble-free in setup.

Make sure to backup your system before getting started, and get a good long run of MemTest86+ to confirm the timings are working.

I have never seen P3Dv4,4 use much more than 8GB of physical  memory on high settings.

Raymond,

P3D 4.4 yes, but the new 4.5 on my ( admittedly not young) system was using 14.9 gb and causing good old fashioned OoMs!

The only way that can happen is if someone totally mismanages their page file.

No! Not so.

This was a straight install per the recommended method and not changing the P3D settings from what I had in 4.4.

It is taxing the graphic card to its limit. I had about 95% usage on a GTX1080.

Never touched any Windows settings.

So what you are saying is that the OS used up all its motherboard RAM to compensate for a lack of VRAM on your 8GB GTX 1080?

TrentXWB,

As an answer to your original question, and a clarification, if you are adding then get the F4-3200C14D-16GVR and not the 32GVR. The 32GVR set is 32gig in 2 or 4 sticks. The 16GVR is 2 8 gig sticks that can be added in the spare slots, as long as your M/B comes with 4 memory slots!

Everything else that other members said about quantity of memory is still valid. 32gig will help if using the PC especially for photo or video applications, etc...

Hope that helps.

I will test this myself when I update and see if it pushes my 11gig of VRAM and my only 16gb of ram, I have used robs config tweak to pre load my Vram in 4.4 and it still not maxed on ultra settings.

@w6kd@cgbartThank you for your input. I realised that I need to get the 16Gb set when adding, I am not planning to overclock further than 3200Mhz and default CL of 14. So I am just planning to use XMP.

I am just afraid that it won't be compatible and giving me CTD even with XMP 3200MhzC14

Well, that's the risk of not using a matched set...the XMP settings are only valid for the set as-provided, so a two-DIMM 16GB set is not guaranteed to work at XMP timings when installed in conjunction with another set of 16 GB DIMMs, even if they're the same make and model.

Yes, I did. Helps quite a bit when the video memory needs assistance from RAM.

I was starting to get OoM errors caused by too little Vram and adding the extra seems to have fixed that.

But then I only have a GTX1080 with 8Gb.
