Big 2 second stutter on final approach to airport

Recommended Posts

This only seems to happen if I have Traffic enabled - commerical jets, GA, road cars, boats etc, but mostly commercial jets it would seem.

It's a shame to have to turn this stuff off as it so adds to the immersion factor.

Any ideas how to ease the big stutter? Sim otherwise runs very smooth.

It's pretty much a fact of life...when the airport first comes into the "reality bubble" all those AI objects load together because they're sitting very close to one another, and that may also be occurring coincident with the loading of the airport scenery, another big gulp of data that hits all at once.

You can try increasing the scenery draw distance using the SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE parameter in the scenery section of the Prepar3d.cfg file so that the scenery elements and the AI acft load at different points and not concurrently.

You can also reduce the traffic levels, which will reduce the severity of the bump when AI acft parked at the airfield load.

Regards

Unfortunately it is the nature of the beast.  The 4.5 update has made it worse as well.

I have found that decreasing the scenery distance actually helps.  I tried the tweaks to increase distance and I ran into severe long frames at airports near big cities with lots of scenery objects whenever nose of plane pointed in the direction of those objects.  On final approach within 5 nm your airport objects should have already loaded.  Decreasing this value does not decrease the quality of terrain textures, only the objects like buildings and wind farms.

Are you doing this with the sliders in options, or a setting in the Prepar3d.cfg file?

I had the same issue and solved it the same way.  I reduced the scenery draw distance in the Prepare3d.cfg file:

SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE=1000.335938

This keeps the program from loading airports off in the distance.

How did you come up with this number? :unsure:

Bert, just tried it.  I believe the default was 53333.335938.  I just changed the whole number

In my case, landing at KSNA, I found that the program was trying to load KAVX right as I touched down and gave me a nice pause about 10ft off the ground.

OK, understand.. my default is:

SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE=32000.000000

Yeah, mine hasn't been changed yet and is at 32000 too.

Need to test this - wondering if this is set by the scenery distance slider in the options dialog, or something else. Not at the computer just now to check.

Not clear to me that changing new settings that we do not fully understand makes much sense.. lets wait for LM to formally release the 4.5. version (including hotfix) and ask in the forum what these settings are for, before mucking around.. YMMV obviously..

As best I know, there were users complaining about custom buildings in the distance appearing in black, and I would guess that this setting has to do with when the textures get loaded and displayed..

Bob Ainscough has done a good job of explaining this number back after v4.4 came out. The maximum setting in the cfg file is 128000.  The UI will reset this number when you change any setting on the Display screen. The maximum for the UI is 64000, very high = 53333.33.  I have been using 45000 for SCENERY_DRAW_DISTANCE for a couple of weeks and that is what I'll stick with for now.  This setting has a huge impact on frame rate.

It has to do with loading of scenery objects, not textures. The textures are part of the object.
