Improved helicopter simulation in FSX?

Recommended Posts

Guest SimulatorPilot

Anyone who flies rotary wing aircrafts in FS2004 will agree that they are not simulated as good as fixed wing ones. For a more realistic experience we have to lower the realism settings to something around 80% so that the models can behave close to a real helicotper. There are lots of posts and articles at www.hovercontrol.com about this from enthusiasts and real-world heli pilots. Also, in the paper "AIRCRAFT SIMULATION TECHNIQUES USED IN LOW-COST, COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE" by Michael Zyskowski(that can be found at www.fsinsider.com/articles/aircraftsimulation.htm) it's stated that helicopter engines are simulated as a low-fidelity model in MSFS as opposed to high-fidelity simulation of fixed wing engines. So, my questions are: Will there be any improvements on the flying behavior/engine simulation of helicopters in FSX? Will their flight dynamics simulation be more accurate than in FS2004? Thanks.

Im not much of a helicopter man, but it seems strange to model the rotary model lower than a fixed wing aircraft. I hope they can correct this, they deserve to be modelled to the same quality.

There will be some improvements but don't expect anything revolutionary. Our aero engineer had a very aggressive schedule this time around working on other sim features. However, he is also a rated helo pilot and therefore has a personal interest in seeing a better experience.

On another note. Just for ideas :) maybe you guys can take a look at Dodosim's Advanced 206 and see what they've acomplished based on the default FS2004 JetRanger flight-model: http://www.dodosim.com/enthus.html
