Volumetric fog and ASP4/ASCA

Recommended Posts

If I close ASP4 and just use the P3D weather settings manually, I can set up a fog layer which doesn't come right down to the ground, and has a max altitude. The results are good and the fog wraps around mountains etc very realistically.

When I use ASP4 I seem to lose control of that type of fog. ASP4 says it works with volumetric fog, but I fail to see how I control that. Even when I set up manual fog in ASP4, there is no control of min/max altitude and if I add a cloud layer, the fog seems to go far too high in altitude. Quite unrealistic.

I haven't found any settings to control this in P3D or ASP4. Should add that I also use PTA and RexSkyForce3D, but I'm not sure those affect this.

Has anyone found a way of combining realistic volumetric fog with ASP4?

To my knowledge, Active Sky determines the altitude of the fog layer automatically based on weather conditions. Whether that altitude is realistic or not is a different question, and in my opinion, there is room for improvement.

Personally, I use a value of 25 miles for maximum surface visibility and 200 miles for maximum upper visibility. I also use Envshade.

Maybe you could post some screenshots to let us see the problem.

The visibility setting inside ASP4 has a long description of what slider to set. 199 miles vis gives you volumetric fog, 200 is a single layer to help low fps.

Why have you started another thread on this?

Just thought it deserved it's own thread.

Are you aware of how aggressive you come over?

Yes, but that is a simple visibility setting. It does not allow you to control fog altitude as you can in naked P3D. It makes a huge difference.

Fog in ASP4 is kind of everywhere and overwhelming.

Fog in P3D naked can be contained between a lower and upper altitude and makes for much more realistic fog. So for instance you can see mountain peaks poking out of the fog correctly, or lower into fog on final approach with the tower blocks poking out of the fog, and the have the fog stop at 500ft above ground so you land in good horizontal viz.

None of that seems possible properly with ASP4 which just introduces this overall massive haze when you set up fog, and that fog can follow you up to thousands of feet altitude, and nothing you can do about it. Hence this thread.

Locking this down - two threads on same subject is unnecessary. Also, this is better resolved by HiFi directly. It appears to be system related. I sue ASP4/ASCA/Env tex and Envshade - I do not have the problem. When you start adding Tomato shade, pta, different cloud textures, etc you will get differing results.
