BLOG: Paul Lange - Lead Developer/Games Designer - MS

Recommended Posts

http://blogs.technet.com/p-12c_pilot/default.aspx"What frustrates me is that I regularly enjoy better performance and visuals on my Dell XPS laptop than we had on the show floor. What's up with that?"......"So why am I telling you all of this? Simple, it's important to understand we picked quick, fun, and game-like missions to showcase at E3. The vast majority of our missions are more "serious" than these, but for the right users they are all fun! As I've said in the past on this blog, we are taking a balanced approach to game design and that means creating missions that appeal to a wide diversity of users. What appeals at E3 and what is appropriate to show at E3 may be different than what you or other users will find engaging."

Random events and branching missions. Sounds like there will be some really great missions developed by 3rd parties before too long. :-yellow1

You should post this on the other thread about how the missions are making fs too much like a game. Think of the possibilities.Ian.

I think the mission editor is included with FSX?

I believe it is, but there is an SDK for it so 3rd party software can take advantage of mission creation as well. I'm hoping anyway.Ian.

FS2004 already has an SDK for the development of "adventures" or "missions" if you like.http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimul...ads_sdk.asp#ablSome folks have created 3rd party missions - some are in the Avsim library. It's just that most of the people who frequent these forums tend to be more focused on "sandbox" missions where we create our own as we fly.

I thought there was...thanks! Never used it but I'm assuming the fsx mission sdk will have more flexibility via branching and logic. I'll check out the current sdk though.Thanks...Ian.

New entry in the Blog: "New mission ideas won't make it into FSX as we locked our list of missions awhile ago, but I hope to provide downloadable missions after we release too."

I should have mentioned the language involved for the missions. We are using XML and our mission editor generates the XML for you. Of course if you want to poke around in your XML directly you can always do that.We plan to release the editor in the SDK along with all of the details you will need to create your own missions.

The current (FS9) adventure language has no connection to the new FSX mission system, so I don't think the old docs will help much (unless, of course, you want to write a FS9 adventure, then by all means go for it :->).There's going to be all sorts of cool stuff in the new mission system, I imagine the 3rd party folks are going to be happy :->Tim

Yeah, please stay away from the ABL SDK. It has no future.
