Learjet 35a pitch trim and TO light

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just bought the Learjet 35A and the light TO Trim stays on. Have pressed Y/D power button and the light goes green, but tne ENG button does not react and the needle of the Pitch Trim does not react.

How can I adjust the setting of Pitch Trim?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Anton Will van Zoelen

On page 5 of the FSW L35A manual it says:

Autopilot will be inoperative if the Primary / Secondary trim switch is set to off.
Autopilot will be inoperative if the main master autopilot switch on the pilot's lower panel is off.

If you open the Hanger (Shift+1) and click on Ready to Start, those switches should be set as needed. Once the above switches are set as necessary, the AP may be turned on (ENGaged) by clicking on the ENG button. You can also use the Z key for this.

The pitch trim is located on the left 'horn' of the pilot's yoke and may be adjusted using the mouse wheel. The trim light will go off when the pitch trim is set within the takeoff range (approximately between the 8 and 10 o'clock positions).

So, I have read the above, but I am trying to do everything from a Cold and Dark state.  I can get neither the Pitch Trim needle to move via the yoke or the AP to have green lights.  I have verified trim switch is not in Off Position and the AP Master switch is in the ON position.  I do not want to rely on the Ready To Start state in the Hanger dialog.  Appreciate any assistance.  PS - I am a GA flyer, but wanted to give this thing a whirl to mix it up a little.  Thanks!  Robert P

Robert,

What startup checklist are you using?  If you have the following switches on/set:

Battery1

Generators 1 and 2 (full up after engine start)

Avionics Master

Inverters (Primary and Secondary)

Autopilot (switch on the lower panel on pilot's side)

Autopilot Pri/Sec switch to Primary (on center console between the seats)

With all this, you should be able to operate the pilot's yoke pitch trim switch using your mouse WHEEL (the mouse left and right buttons operate the roll trim).

Autopilot lights should also work.

Yes, I am using the checklist from the aircraft folder.  I have done these things above per the checklist.  I did get the AP lights to work after loading the default P3D aircraft (F-35 I think), then loading the FSW Lear.  Unfortunately, the trim indicator is still not working, but I am able to adjust it with mouse (NOTE: I use CH Eclipse yoke and I have the trim programmed to a wheel via FSUIPC, so it is what I use to adjust trim and it has moved the needle in the Lear before).  Sometimes it will work and sometimes not, but the last few times I've tried to fly, it isn't working.

Thanks for the feedback!  Robert

A number of us have found that in P3Dv4 loading the Default F-35 prior to loading other a/c seems to make a difference. Exactly why is not clear except perhaps to say it has to do with initialization of some of the parameters -- so it is good to start with the F-35 each time.

I also operate the pitch trim with a button on my yoke through FSUIPC. Here is how I set it up using Offset Sword Increment and Decrement:

A quick update...I recently reinstalled REX SkyForce 3D.  It is still installed, but I didn't open it for my latest flight and the trim indicator is working now - go figure.  I have had misc issues with SF3D in the past, that's why it was uninstalled.  Thanks for the help!

Another quick update...I started a flight again this morning and forgot to load the default plane and noticed the AP lights not illuminating, so I loaded the default plane, then loaded the Lear and the AP lights were working, but the Trim indicator wouldn't move - I didn't even have REX SF3D running.  So, there is still an issue with the trim indicator.  I went ahead and made my flight and the trim adjusted properly...just without the trim indicator working.

Thanks! Robert

Hi Robert,

After you forgot to load the default F35 first, did you restart the sim -- that might be best.

When the trim or trim indicator 'fails' in some way when going through the Eclipse yoke/FSUIPC system, does the trim and trim indicator still work correctly if you use the mouse wheel directly on the Lear35's yoke trim button?

How do you have the trim setup via the Eclipse yoke and FSUIPC?

At this point I think I would:

1. Be careful to load the F35 first at sim startup and see if the trim system works consistently (i.e., for a number of fights) without running REX SF3D.

2. If the above works, then I'd try adding REX SF3D into the mix.

4. If the trim or trim indicator fails at any point, check to see if using the Lear35 yoke's trim button with the mouse works.

5. If problems persist, maybe try uninstalling REX SF3D to see what happens since it apparently has caused problems for you in the past.

Ok, here's the latest.  So I started the default plane in P3Dv4 (F-35), then changed to the Lear35, I still didn't get the AP lights (they didn't illuminate via the test button that checks all the lights.  The trim indicator didn't move as well.  So, I loaded the F-35 again, then the Lear, on this second load of the Lear, the lights worked as expected along with the trim indicator.

Next I will uninstall REX SF3D and start a flight normall and see what happens.

Thanks,

Robert

Well, I removed REX SF3D and still had the same issues; however, the last couple of flights with the Lear I first loaded the default plane at my departure airport and then load the Lear and everything has worked as required.  Not a huge ordeal, just a little annoying.  I just added FSDT GSX, now I can't stop flying with the Lear.  It is immersive on it's own, but now I have other stuff to take it to another level of immersion, I don't care about the other...hahahahaha.  Can't wait till the updated textures for the Lear are released.

Thanks for the assistance Al!

Robert,

Glad you found a procedure that works. Except for trying a reinstall of the Lear, I'm out of ideas at this point.

Update:  For some reason, the trim indicator will not work at all this morning.  My last flight was Friday last week and I haven't touched my sim since.  I have tried everything, including loading the default F35 and reinstall (uninstalled first) of the Lear and no joy 😞  The AP lights are working well, but this trim indicator...ughhhhh.  As a matter of fact, the trim button on the yoke in the Lear VC hasn't worked at all that I recall - when I say it doesn't work, I mean the trim indicator will not move with it either...even when I have the CH Yoke trim wheel working.  I know that switch is working because the values change as required, but the indicator does nothing.  This indicator is a fickle beast.  haha....any other ideas I can try?  I'm having withdrawals, but I really would rather fly with that indicator working.

I don't have any brilliant ideas -- sorry. Seems to me somewhere you have a conflict between one of your addons and the Lear trim where the addon is trapping the control signal key or button. I assume you have tried using the mouse WHEEL directly on the yoke trim button.

1. You could try going to something like C:\Users\....\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4 and open the Prepar3d.cfg file and using a text editor comment out the saved DEFAULT flight line using // as shown below. Then save the file and restart the sim, load the F35 and save it as the DEFAULT flight, and see what happens.

[USERINTERFACE]
SHOW_SCENARIO_WINDOW=1
SHOW_MISSION_CAPTIONS=1
PAUSE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=0
PROMPT_ON_EXIT=1
RestoreTimeOnMove=1
ScreenshotImageFormat=2
ShowMessageText=True
Map_Orientation=2
BroadcastGPSData=0
MUTE_ON_LOST_FOCUS=0
UIHardwareAcceleration=True
//SITUATION=C:\Users\Al\Documents\Prepar3D v4 Files\Default F35 Lightning 35L KCOS

2. If the above doesn't solve the problem, next I would try letting P3D rebuild the complete Prepar3d.cfg file. To do this, rename the existing cfg file to something like prepar3d_old.cfg to back it up. Now the next time you start P3D it will build a new prepar3d.cfg file, and you will again have to save a DEFAULT flight

3. You could also try deleting ALL saved flights. Saved flights are usually at C:\Users\your name\Documents\Prepar3D v4 Files and look something like this:

 4486c6f456.JPG

4. Finally, if you have another sim like FSX or FSX-SE with different add-ons, or are willing to at least temporarily remove some addons, install the Lear35 into that sim and see what happens.
