Volumetric Light?

Recommended Posts

I wonder if we'll get it with FSX. Seeing the sun's rays breaking through the clouds would be a really nice effect.

It doesn't show the sun's rays breaking through the clouds like this examplehttp://www.terragalleria.com/images/np-tropics/ever1975.jpeg

I dunno... do any of us own a computer system powerful enough to support that method of lighting for everything that's a light source?

Yes... one of the video card features is real-time volumetric light, and bump map, reflections, transparency, etc... found in many games these days. The developer decide what to use, but if the video card isn't powerful it can hit the frame rate (not big news :)FS uses a lot of geometry and textures, maybe volumetric will wait a little more to be added ?Ulisses

The upcoming game Crysis (the successor to Far Cry) has a similar effect. Take a look at these screenshots (scroll to near the top of the screen): http://www.crysishq.com/thread.php?postid=805#post805 The shot of the terrain with the sun behind clearly shows streams of light in the mist. However, this is caused by terrain and I don't know if the clouds will also have the same effect. I think you'll agree some of these shots are very impressive. They show genuine volumetric clouds (which look spectacular in several Crysis videos). Oh, yes, and the clouds in Crysis do cast shadows! If this effect isn't in FSX it'll surely be in the next version. Best regards, Chris

How big can an object be?I ask, because volumetric rays could at leat be faked by creating very large objects (the rays) and angling them according to viewpoint.Of course, this would be much more convincing should ground shadows of clouds come into play.. :)Andrew
