Start as Administrator!!

Recommended Posts

HI Jean-Luc.  Now, in order to get the 750 to start up, I have to start X-Plane as Administrator.  Do you think  that if I reinstalled the Trainer and the GTN750, that I wouldn't have to start as Administrator every time?

Just wondering, are you planning on attending the FS EXPO this June in Orlando, FL?

Thanks a lot,

Howard

Hi Howard,

This begs the question: what have you changed or installed (and how) in your system between 'before it was fine' and 'now I need to run as-admin'?

The trainer dependency on 'as-admin' could only be related to the following:

  1. The trainer was installed as-admin, therefore, it must be run as-admin otherwise it won't 'see' the normal registry data path but the 'as-admin' registry data path (Windows file/path redirection shims)
  2. The trainer was installed as-admin, therefore, it must be run as-admin otherwise Windows will prevent the trainer from reading and writing its own files (file access rights protection).
  3. The trainer was installed normally but one or more of its normal operation registry path and/or file path (up the chain to the root) are not accessible for the normal user account.

Hi Jean-Luc.  The only thing I can think of is that, after a long absence, I ran X-Plane in VR.  After that is when I had to start X-Plane as administrator in order for the 750 to start up.

Thanks,

Howard

Isn't starting in VR requires Steam, which itself only runs as-admin?

No.  VR with X-Plane does not require steam.

I'm sorry for the delay. Can you please just clarify for me "In order to get the 750 to start up, I have to start X-Plane as Administrator".

I'm wondering whether you can select a GTN device in the menu and the popup window shows up but the screen remains off, or the popup window doesn't even show up?

Can you also let me know about this:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (regedit)
  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
  3. Is there a key wich is the full path to the GTN Trainer .exe and if so, what is this registry key value?

Hi Jean-Luc.

I right click on "X-Plane.exe"  and then click on  "Run as Administrator" and X-Plane starts up and the GTN750 also starts up and runs just fine.

If I don't do that, then X-Plane starts up and the GTN750 has a black box and won't start.

Here here is the registry entry:

C:\Program Files (x86)|Garmin\Trainers\Packages\GTN\Bin\GTN Simulator.exe                                        Type:  REG_SZ                Data:  DISABLETHEMES

Can you please let me know whether you're seeing the GTN Simulator.exe process in Process Explorer when running as a normal user?

Also can you please try this with our latest GTN v2.5.17:

  1. Open the RealityXP.GTN.ini file from your aircraft folder with a text editor
  2. Right under the [GTN_750_1] section line, add the following:

    [GTN_750_1]
    DebugValue = 1
    LogTrainer = 7

  3. Save the modifications
  4. Run X-Plane normally, select the aircraft with the GTN, exit X-Plane and backup the rxpGTN.xpl.log file.
  5. Run X-Plane as-admin, select the aircraft with the GTN, exit X-Plane and backup the rxpGTN.xpl.log file.
  6. Post the content of the two log files for comparison.

I apologize, it is a "\"

I updated to the GTN v2.5.17 and added your modifications.

I am not seeing the GTN Simulator.exe when I run the Task Bar.

I cannot find the rxpGTN.xpl.log file.  Please tell me where it is located.

Ok this helps a lot:

This means when in normal mode the trainer fails to access the non volatile memory file located in:

"C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\nonvol"

(see the User's manual "embedded memory" chapter for details).

Most likely once running as-admin it is possible the nonvol file gets restricted privileges which make it no longer accessible as a normal user? Is there any chance you could cross-check the access rights of the nonvol file?

Does this help?

C:\Users\Howard\AppData\Local\Garmin\Trainers\Launcher\Hangar\NGSEP1\Navigator_1\GTN\750\winfs_mount

It is also Read-only.

Hi,

the 'winfs_mount' is a Garmin trainer launcher file only.

I've been searching the forum for past messages about the 'access rights' and I've found this one:

It pertains to the X-Plane.exe access rights settings only, but the same principles apply to any file and folder in Windows (right-click > Properties > Security).

Can you please check these security settings on the nonvolatile file first?

For the GTN 750 #1 the file is:
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Trainers\GTN\nonvol\sys_nandi
